Will this year merely see new colored dials and bezels?
Apr 11, 2020,20:54 PM
The lockdown still pretty severe and the watch industry is bracing for a long drawn and slow return to normalcy.
The thing that seems most certain is that all new models will be deferred by the brands to the next year; and the only introductions we may see during all of 2020 could be dials in different colors and the odd new bezel here and there and a few cosmetic change driven limited editions.
Second thing that might happen is a greater reliance on online sales by many many more brands, backed up by investments in establishing better web presence and introduction of super hi-res images of watches, more demo videos of models and perhaps financing arrangements with lending institutions to provide EMI based purchase facilities to customers for hi-value pieces
The pricing models may therefore undergo paradigm shift, as the customer may rather prefer to buy online at a lesser price, transparency and not end up on indefinite waitlists at dealers.
YouTubers and Instagram Influencers and Digital Watch magazines will most likely gain more popularity and will create more informative and editorial content than before.
Independent watch-brands may choose pre-sold subscriptions route to lock-in customers for the planned new models.
The grey market driven premiums created by vested interests riding up certain models based on hyped up scarcity will start to taper down.
Flippers will be squeezed out.
Watch shows may get more fragmented and become region specific.
2020 is perhaps the year of change.
Let us watch events unfold.
