Horological Meandering

Hi Guys, we are leaving for Japan tomorrow and am considering bringing my VC Overseas and Rolex Daytona. Are there issues with customs and declaring these? I have photo copies of the purchase receipt. I don’t want to risk getting side ways with customs or...

I spent a month there last year but only went with my Explorer 1 (lots of trekking in humid nature areas). Japan is one of the last places on earth I would worry about theft but the hassle with customs, general worries about storage ect. Makes it not wort... 

But after hearing horror stories at customs and the risk of getting robbed i now travel with one or max two (each on a wrist )

As a tourist coming into the country, I have never been stopped and asked about my watches--I usually travel with two or three without issues. I'm always more concerned about coming back into the US. I was once asked about my watch--but it turned out the ... 

…when we lived there in 2014 and I don’t remember doing anything special…maybe it’s different… If you buy anything pricey keep your passport handy and you shouldn’t have to pay tax.

Tax-free shopping has become very easy and prevalent.

…but, just bring one. It is less stressful that leaving stuff in hotel safes. Even allowing for your trip being to countries where you generally don’t need to worry about theft in the same way you would elsewhere. Besides, aren’t you going to be buying li... 

and have never been stopped at customs. Japan is very safe too be it on the streets or at the hotel. I would recommend you to bring your whole collection to Japan and enjoy your trip not worrying about theft.

when you see so many beautiful watches in Jack Road and other vintage watch stores, you'll probably bring back 2 or 3. I'd suggest you check with your own customs department.

Me and my wife declared a watch and a bag last year when we went to Osaka. Customs just asked if it’s for personal use, we said yes, and they said no need to declare. Ymmv.

I've flown into and out of Japan countless times over the years with more than one watch and have never had a problem.

Hi Larry, I have been to Japan many times the past 15 years and thus far the customs has been kind to me. Going in is generally fine as one rarely gets stopped. I keep the unworn watches in my carry bag so the customs can surely see them from the scanner ... 

I brought my Casio as a 2nd watch. Really, wanted to bring the panda Daytona, oh well.
