Size Matters

But only a bit. We automatically reduce any uploaded images that are more than 1280px in either direction so that the largest dimension is 1280px. We then also store a couple of smaller versions for use when the largest one is not wanted. We never make an image larger, so if you upload an image that is 600 x 1000, that will be the largest version of that image you can display in your post. But you gain nothing by uploading an image that is a whole lot larger than 1280px in either direction, because we will use a very high-quality resizing algorithm to reduce it to that size. I would say the ideal size for uploading would be where the longest dimension is anywhere between 1280px and 3200px. Bigger than that, and the time to resize the image to bring it down to our max size starts to become noticeable, though not terribly so until you start getting up over about 4500px.
