Well, I know of the watch maker Daniel Jean Richard, more or less the "grand father of the automated watch making in the Jura". He is definitely a key person in the Swiss Horlogery history.
But of the brand "Jean Richard" I did not here before SOWIND "(re-)created" the brand a couple of years ago...
No offense meant (but a discussion worth), doesn't it go into the same category of "brands" as e.g. Graham, Tompion, Arnold and Son, and even Wyler (first called Wyler - than Wyler Vetta - changed now again to Wyler Geneve - because it sounds better?)and just resently Moser ... ??? The last two were "real" brands at their time with a watch factory and production - the others where exellent watch makers and in their time probably very well known. But were they known for a factory? Are there watches with the label Jean-Richard e.g. in the last century? Aren't the now called brands "brand new" with no attachment to what so ever, except e.g. for the name "Jean Richard" and the model "Bressel" (the village where Jean Richard came from in the late 17 century, I think)?
To be quite honest I am in a confict with myself what I should think of these "brands". What is the relation to the essence of the brand - if there is one...? Why not choosing a new name if there is no correlation? The harder but maybe also the more honest way...?
