Some sad news: Wally Schirra 1923~2007 A true HERO in every sense...

I was saddened, and frankly a little shocked, to have learned today via an IM from Keith Downing of the passing of Wally Schirra at the age of 84.

Wally was the only astronaut to have flown on all of the first three NASA programs in Space: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. Since Keith learned the news via Fox News Channel, I'm including the official story from that source:

Wally Schirra, One of America's Seven Original Mercury Astronauts, Dead at 84:

Wally was known, and I am pretty certain I can say he would most like being remembered as: "A Pilot's Pilot". He was in person exactly as you'd expect him from seeing him in recordings and on TV. I recently had the opportunity to meet Wally and I can assure everyone that most of you have not yet heard the last from Wally. But that will have to wait for a more appropriate time in the days to come.

I really just don't have the words to express how great of a guy Wally was. I can tell you he was upbeat, positive and seemingly in remarkable shape. Which is why I'm so taken aback at this news.

I know I personally feel a great sense of loss at his passing. I know we all are much richer for having been blessed having him a rich and full 84 years and we'll miss his knowledge, talents and enthusiasm in the years to come.

Please remember him well in your own way.
