Hello all
After many years of admiring and pondering PPs, and sticking to JLCs and my solitary Lange 1815 up/down, I am now ready to buy my first PP. I set out looking for the 5054 because I like the officer case and the half-hunter back, but I can't find it in any of the authorised retailers in Hong Kong. Apparently sold out and some dealers even told me it was rumoured to be discontinued or that production has come down - don't know how far this is true. Have now looked at the 5055 and the retailer I saw today also had the 5055 in black dial. I would really like a moonphase and seeing that I couldn't find the 5054, I decided to look closer at the 5055.
When I first looked for a PP (in my budget range), I set my sights on the 5055 because I thought I wanted the modern dial. But after I saw many pics of the 5054 officer case (and those wonderful lugs) and looking at the 5053 in real life with the similar case, I was taken in with the 5054. However, I still like the 5055 and am now considering the 5055, although not sure whether to go with the black dial (which I know has been discontinued) or the white dial. The white dial is more legible and clearer, while the black dial does look "sexier". The set-back with the black dial is that the moonphase seems to blend in and is not very legible. I can't really decide and am looking for a tie-breaker.....my questions.....
(1) Is there any upside in getting the 5055 in black dial seeing as it is discontinued?
(2) What is the reputation of the 5055 in general? Is it considered in the PP-collector world as one of the "ugly ducklings" given the modern case (I have seen such comments from time to time)? In which case, should I just wait for the 5054 to become available?
(3) Any other observations, thoughts about the 5055 in general
Many thanks for any replies or thoughts. Best regards, David.
