I'm happy with all my Pateks, but none of them, not even my 5970, is
truly a sports watch. When Patek came out with their first in-house
chrono movement in the 5959 and then released the 5960, I started
expecting a sports watch would be released soon. But I was disappointed
when that sports watch came in a Nautilus case. I don't wear polyester
disco suits, so there's no way I was going to wear a 1970s era
Nautilus-encased watch.
So, I started looking for a well
made sports watch. I've known about Richard Mille for a while, and knew
they were well-made watches, but figured from the dimensions indicated
in articles that they would be just too large. But, because they have
no lugs, they are actually comparable in size to a 5970. I'm currently
testing the waters with a RM010, but am thinking about getting the
Richard Mille chronographs next.
I'll probably end up
wearing my Pateks as before around the office, but I'll wear the
Richard Milles when I'm out for the evening, or even when I'm ourdoors,
basically any situation when I'd be inclined to wear a sports watch.
I'm still open to getting a Patek sports watch one of these days if
something comes out that I like, but in the meantime with Richard
Mille, I'm not so impatient anymore to get a Patek sports watch.
