Ornatus-Mundi presents a detailed look at the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 1969 Tribute To The Rolling Stones, a limited edition timepiece that integrates the iconic 'Tongue and Lip Design' logo. This article, part of the 'Zenith Coffee House Tales' series, explores how Zenith tastefully incorporates this pop culture emblem into its classic El Primero Chronomaster, examining the design nuances and the watch's overall appeal. Ornatus-Mundi prompts readers to consider the balance between brand heritage and celebrity collaborations.

"For The Rolling Stones, British designer John Pasche designed the "Tongue and Lip Design" logo in 1971, which was originally reproduced on the Sticky Fingers album. In August 2008, the design was voted the greatest band logo of all time in an online poll.[3] In what was perhaps one of the first cases of rock brand marketing, Jagger reportedly approached the Royal College of Art in 1969 looking to commission images for the band. Pasche designed the logo and ended up working for the Stones from 1970 to 1974. “Face to face with him, the first thing you were aware of was the size of his lips and his mouth,” Pasche said." The El Primero Chronomaster 1969 is a notable reference within the El Primero collection, distinguished by its open-back design showcasing the high-frequency movement. This particular model pays homage to the original El Primero aesthetic while incorporating modern manufacturing techniques and an exhibition case back, a feature not present in the historical models. It represents a contemporary interpretation of a significant chronograph design, appealing to collectors interested in both heritage and visible mechanical artistry. The dial layout, with its overlapping sub-dials and distinct color scheme, is a direct callback to the early El Primero chronographs.
This reference typically features a stainless steel case, housing the automatic El Primero caliber. The movement operates at a high frequency, characteristic of the El Primero series, providing precise timekeeping and chronograph functionality. The case diameter is a balanced size, suitable for a range of wrist sizes, and it is fitted with a sapphire crystal on both the front and the exhibition case back, allowing for an unobstructed view of the intricate movement. The power reserve is consistent with modern automatic chronographs, offering practical daily wearability.
The Chronomaster 1969 appeals to collectors who appreciate the technical achievements of the El Primero movement and its historical significance, combined with the visual appeal of an open-worked dial section. It stands as a key offering in the contemporary El Primero lineup, bridging the gap between historical designs and modern horological preferences. Variants often include different strap options and minor dial color variations, but the core design language remains consistent across the reference.
I recall he is a big fan of the Rolling Stones! :) More serious, personally I am not a big fan of these kind of Limited Editions, especially if the "base" version already is a LE itself. At least I find that Zenith made this one in a tasteful way (or as tasteful one can with a tongue hanging out)... As for the watch, I prefer the solid dial version. Thank you for another enjoyable Coffee House tale, Magnus! :) Best Blomman
A nice write up as usual, how about Zenith ditch their fledgling ambassador scheme and let their watches sell on merit alone, I didn't need geriatric rock stars to sway my decision on my last two purchases, just keep building great, well priced watches and leave this sort or thing to AP.
Now, I was thinking, for a few minutes, if Mr Nataf was back at the helm of Zenith. The " open window " between 10 ans 12 o clock plus the tongue... Well... It kills the Watch, for me. Best, Nicolas
and I agree, both are a bit 'dated' if you like - thus they may be a good fit? *let their watches sell on merit alone* - full agreement here! Best, Magnus
The game some brands play - Limited Edition of a Limited Edition.... :( Best Blomman
I asked for any new watch to shoot.... Guess what they showed me?! ;) Best Blomman
