How many watches is enough?

Let me explain how I got on this topic (again). My wife told me this week that I could sell, or trade in smile, her 2 other watches because now she has got 'the one'.

"This watch is all I need" she said to me. Obviously shocked I responded: "but....but....what about your Royal Oak?

"I wouldn't miss that one anymore" she replied. "is that a bad thing?" I told her that of course that would not be a bad thing (although I don't understand it), because if she is satisfied with this Day-Date and she knows for sure, she knows. And I can assure you that if her mind is set, it's set.

What it did do, was make me jealous. Just think about it. How satisfying and relaxing it would be to have found 'the watch'. The ultimate watch. 'The one'. The watch that; no matter what circumstances, event, dress code, attire, whatever new thing would come along at every new SIHH, Basel, etc, etc would satisfy you at all times.

Have you ever had that feeling? LOL of course you haven't. You are WIS, just like me.

So my question repeated: How many is enough?

Is there such thing as too many watches? I think there is. A year has got 12 months. So there is a limited time of enjoying (y)our watches. And you do need more than a few weeks per year to really get to know a watch ( if you get my drift). So what would (should) be the maximum before turning into watch megalomaniac?

Let's try to break this down. What would a normal person really need?

1. A dress watch
2. A sports watch

Ok, that's settled. Now what would a WIS need? All the watches he/she can get his hands on? No, because that would mean we are megalomaniacs. Or maybe the mentioned above plus some watches with complications? In order to have some differentiation? Some variation in metals? Sizes? Shapes? Colors? Straps, bracelets?

Dear lord, I'm afraid we are lost sheep.

But against better judgement I ask you, my fellow PuristS, again: How many watches is/should be enough?

0 - 10?
0 - 20?
0 - 50?
0 - ..............

I've reached a 10 watch collection now, and I'm getting the feeling that that, more or less, should be enough. Though I could easily add 10 or 20 more if budget allowed it. But would I enjoy them though? Again: a year has only got 12 months... And the older we get, the faster time is ticking away....

Is there someone with some enlightenment out there? Care to share?

Use this formula to determine the correct number.

While the minimum number of watches one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number of watches currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of watches owned that would result in separation from your partner. Interestingly, I also find this this applies my bicycles.....

A classic question. With some classic hesitations. ;)

Your wife's statement is very interesting. She's not a watch nut, but she has good sense. She has the feeling she fell on THE watch, and that it is HER watch, the watch for a life, for / or HER life. And that's pretty brilliant. Now let's go back to us... I can easily say it, as I am more and more certain about that. I can easily sell 60 of my watches, to just add the 8 / 10 I miss the most, I madly hunt and try to fund. That's the easy way, the easy game. Now, if I want to enter a different and

Quality over quantity

As \'they\' have always said right? All of us need a learning curve to get there though. It\'s a journey traveled alone. Although this special group of people, PuristS, are helping (at least me) taking short cuts. But nevertheless my short collecting experience has led me to believe that in some cases you really need to own and wear a watch for some time before really being able to give judgement. And thanks to that process personal preferences will get sharpened. Anyway; I\'m really curious wha

You got it...

For example, I am trying to end some themes, then to see which pieces I will let go, and I will do so... These are not only words... Oooh yes, there will be at least one Duometre. Maybe two... Best, Nicolas

I 100% agree with you on those points. I have the same experiences and thoughts.

But I think I'll be satisfied with 10.

Not many for me.

Always an evolving topic to which answers may differ with time. First, there are different types of owners/collectors. As far as I'm concerned, I like to wear my watches often (I have each one out for a 1 to 6 months period of time, then, when feeling the need to, I change for another period and so on). If I feel one remains in the safe and I don't really feel like wearing it anymore, it should go as I feel it is a waste (this is happening to me right now for several of my watches). However, I s
