Dje's contemplation of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A versus the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo 15202 delves into a classic debate among luxury watch collectors. This post, rich with personal reflection and community input, offers a timeless comparison of two iconic Gérald Genta designs, providing valuable insights for anyone facing this pivotal decision.
Hi,
This is an old
story repeating. But I'm convinced that the same facts, brought over and
over, don't always bring the same outcome. In fact I've asked
myself that same question many times, but there's at least one aspect of
the equation that changes, myself!
As you
certainly know or noticed I've been lurking around the 5711 for a while
now. A long while in fact, a too long while. That's the most tempting new
Patek Philippe for me, because I love it, because I would actually wear it and
because that would be the most affordable.
To be honest
I'm getting tired to run after a mirage and I'm really giving up.
I'm
giving up and a new watch launched earlier this year is giving me the strength
to move my mind. The watch was designed by the same great man and has a close
positioning.

Each time
I've seen or tried an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo, any version,
I've been appealed. The watch may be rougher than the Nautilus, or to be
clearer not show the same refinement, it has a strong design too. The 2121
calibre is a plus too, as it is a dream engine.

Audemars Piguet
launched a revised version of the modern Royal Oak Jumbo 15202 this year and
the new version seems to be in the best configuration a Jumbo could adopt. I
tried it at the SIHH and was really seduced by the move. My pics are very bad
but you can see it below on Foversta's picture.
Of course it is
not so more accessible new than the Patek Philippe Nautilus, but second hand
Jumbo models are in my reach in the precedent version (shown below in the form
of the upscaled dream PuristS 10th limited edition). I could choose
to take it as it is and live. It may be less beautiful than a 5711 but it may
be mine!
The point of my
question is to ask you if you think that I'm objective enough to choose a
sound solution, or if as a Patek Philippe forum moderator I'm
unconsciously sold to Patek Philippe and unable to make a sound choice?
I know that I love
the Nautilus 5711 but I really appreciate the Royal Oak Jumbo too and I may be
focussed on the Patek Philippe because I spend so much time here.
Maybe I should
take a 6 month rest reading on the Audemars Piguet forum and stop coming here for
that time?

But who can say
no to that beauty ?
Best
Dje
The Patek Philippe reference 5711/1A-011, part of the Complications collection, is distinguished by its white dial, offering a different aesthetic compared to other dial variations within the 5711 series. This particular configuration provides a clean and legible presentation, appealing to collectors who prefer a more understated yet refined look. It represents a specific iteration of a well-known Patek Philippe model, recognized for its integrated design.
The watch features a 40mm stainless steel case, housing the self-winding Caliber 26-330 SC movement. This movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, contributing to its water resistance of 120 meters. The fixed bezel and integrated bracelet are characteristic elements of its construction.
This reference appeals to collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's offerings, particularly those seeking specific dial colors within established model lines. Its production run from 2019 to 2021 marks it as a relatively recent, yet now discontinued, variant. The watch's specifications align with Patek Philippe's standards for mechanical timepieces.
Can clearly compete with the Nautilus, being 3700 or 5711. I will go further... I find a R.O jumbo more appealing than a Nautilus, even a Ref 3700. I find the R.O more sport chic, less ... how to say it correctly... Mannered? The R.O is unique, in its look, and has been sometimes badly imitated ( Cf Hublol ) while the Naughty Lus is typically born in the Seventies, and this very special shape has been chosen for several TV screen watches, the PP being more sophisticated than the other TV screens
But the question should be which one do you get first Andy.
you may argue that the Nautilus is more refined etc etc, but refinement on a sports watch is less important then sports chic!! the only advantage the Naut has over the Oak is simply it can be hidden under a shirt cuff, other then that, IMHO the Oak trumps and tumps the Naut in every way. good luck mate, fulfill your dreams... best, Horo
As i usually tire quickly eith my watches and im always changing Except for my Jumbo and my Milguass I also oen a 5980 and modt certainly know its there to stay Obviously i would suggest getting both but for me if i really had to choise I would always go for the OAK any time
That's why don't be N(a)ut and go for Oak I think that you summed it up perfectly. It is better to have Oak now then Nautilus eventually. Best D
