CL's provocative comparison between his Vacheron Constantin Cornes de Vache 1955 and the iconic Patek Philippe 5070 challenges conventional wisdom in luxury watch collecting. By focusing on the shared Lemania-based movement and distinct design philosophies, CL invites readers to reconsider what truly defines a horological legend. His personal experience with both references provides a unique lens through which to evaluate enduring appeal and market dynamics.

I have been wearing this CDV 1955 a lot during this hunkering down period. It is a great size for my wrist and a super handsome dial to stare at. It is also a very comfortable daily wear considering that it is a stainless steel.

I can't help but to compare this with the 'legendary' Patek 5070 since both have the same lemania movement.  What if this CDV is indeed a Patek instead? Won't it literally dethrone 5070? Stanless Steel , two tone, 38.5mm case... I sure think so smile. I owned a 5070 before and I know it is beautiful but this CDV 1955 has my vote for sure and I'm not being biased :P

Imho, as long as VC doesn't make the mistake of Lange Datograph by over produce and doing a part 2, this CDV will stand a chance to also be a legend in future. talking about part 2 series, Grand Seiko is the next Lange.

Because I've never really understood the magic of the 5070. The oversized case made palatable by visual trickery, while well done, has never stood out as a particularly interesting design, I prefer the 5170 in total design. I love the CDV's very distinctive case shape, VC's unifying brand trait, but I also think that same trait makes it polarizing and niche. If VC had the same brand equity as Patek, I'm not convinced it would be as popular as the 5070 due simply to the distinctive design; wherea

I've always liked the Datograph and respected its incredible movement. From a movement perspective, nothing is better, except perhaps a Montblanc Villeret 16.29. The biggest problem with the Datograph has always been wearing it, which is why I never really lusted to own one. It was too thick, to heavy, and I had to strap it on very tight since it was very top heavy (to prevent it rotating on my wrist) which made it uncomfortable to wear. The better competitor to this timepiece is the A. Lange &

Even though I adore my 5070G if forced to choose between the 2 I would choose the VC without hesitation, of course this would have to exclude the monetary difference as that plays a factor since one could simply choose the 5070G and sell it to purchase few VCs. I also own the 1st Gen Datograph BUT I don't think it is the same type of watch as the 5070, 5170, nor the CdV as the Datograph has the large date function. If you wanted to do a comparison with Lange, it would have to be the 1815 chronog

I consider the first series Datograph a legend. It is a watch that I have had 3-4 times. I am not a fan of black dial but I still enjoy the watch very much. It is a great piece of probably the greatest modern chronograph ever produce by any manufacturer. How does one beat that movement? It is incredibly beautiful. Still, it was produced way too many, with different colored case and then followed by a series 2, which kind of killed its desirability 'now'. I do think one day when we look back, thi

It has always been a very strong competitor in the past with Lange Datograph. At one point when i had both, I tend to wear the Dato everyday, simply because Dato jus look very well made when compared to 5070. Be it case wise or movement wise, it is that obvious. Then, I also had the VC les historique chronograph with salmon dial and also the white dial before and this is really underwhelming on the wrist and I didn't like the shape of pushers. The finishing overall in those VC just cannot compar
