A fellow WPS purist asked me how the Speedmaster Moonshine stacks up to a comparable Daytona in color, quality, extra so I decided to take some photos and let others decides for themselves... I posted this in the Omega forum but wanted to be fair which is why I am also posting in the Rolex section πŸ˜‰πŸ˜. As a caveat I will say I am a Daytona AND Speedmaster fan but I prefer the Moonshine as I find it more special. It is my favorite modern Speedmaster.

To make it more fair, I put the Moonshine up against probably the most coveted YG Daytona at the moment (John Meyer) so we could have an apples to apples comparison of 2 YG flagship models.

For me, there is NO comparison. I would take the Moonshine without hesitation in terms of quality, details, historical significance, robustness, etc...

Rolex is known for their durability and toughness but with the caliber 3861, Omega beats Rolex at their own game.

The caliber 3861 is technically superior if we look at the specs and numbers:

* Antimagnetic to 15000 gauss minimum

* Resistant to 5000 G forces (YES 5000 G, only 3 other watches can make that claim < 2 Richard Mille watches and the JLC EL2 >. The 2 RMs cost 20X more while the EL2 cost 8X more. Makes the caliber 3861 VERY compelling indeed.

* METAS chronometer certified

* 8 - 10 year expected service intervals

Where Rolex wins out is water resistance and longer power reserve but I am not swimming with my Speedmaster nor Daytona so for me water resistance has zero importance since I could wear a dedicated dive watch if needed. I also personally prefer a manual wind chronograph so winding it daily is part of the experience for me, hence a longer power reserve has little importance for me as well.

You can look and the photos and choose for yourself πŸ˜‰πŸ˜œ.

About the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 15000

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Reference 15000

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 15000 represents the brand's Oyster Perpetual Date series in a 34mm case configuration. This reference was produced from 1977 to 1988, positioning it within Rolex's automatic watch lineup with date functionality and silver dial presentation.

The 34mm stainless steel case houses the automatic caliber 3035 movement, providing 42 hours of power reserve. The watch features an acrylic crystal and smooth bezel configuration, with 100-meter water resistance. The silver dial is paired with the Oyster bracelet, maintaining the series' steel construction throughout.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a mid-sized automatic Rolex from the late 1970s and 1980s production period. Additionally for every one of these "special" Speedmasters, how many more of these gold Daytonas will you see? Plenty more ;-)

But, i must say i would pick the moonshine as well for most of the reason you mention and just the overall emotion it triggers for me when i look at it.

The Moonshine. I’m not sure I could rock either which tells you how much cooler Justin (or Yokozuna) is than me. I do wish Speedmaster had greater water resistance in general but still no question. Omega is gaining on Rolex...I’m sure it’s probably a matter of production numbers first and demand a close second with regard to resale but since the question has been posed... for me Omega technology is superior in both design and materials. No put down on Rolex... it’s like comparing Ferrari to Lamb

Without a shadow of doubt, my choice would be the Speedmaster. Reasons why are several technical, of which many have been mentioned already and esthetic reasons. Furthermore I’m probably one of the very few who think the Daytona is not a desirable watch.

I find its design to be more visually pleasing than the Daytona’s. Love the red bezel and the black hour markers set against the gold. Ano Nuevo

But here the moonshine is more elegant. I need to see it on Yokozuna first, to really be sure!
