Nicolas (amanico) initiates a community showcase of Rolex Submariners without crown guards, presenting his friend's Ref. 5508 with an 'Exclamation Dot Dial' and his own specimen with a unique patina. He argues that while 'Big Crown' Subs are celebrated for their strength and character, the smaller, no-crown-guard Subs possess an undeniable elegance and class. Nicolas invites fellow collectors to share their own examples of these distinctive vintage Rolex timepieces.

I accidentally fell on these pictures I took on a friend's 5508. A nice Exclamation Dot Dial, in superb condition.

We have a lof of Bic Crown Fans, here, and there are some excellent reasons to explain that passion: The strenght of the Watch, its character, its presnece of the wrist are among the most often mentionned explanations.

But the small no crownguard Subs have strong arguments, too, such as an undipsutable elegance, class.

Here is my friend's specimen, with mine.

No Exclamation Dot on mine, but a superb deep and flawless dial with an uncommon patina of the indexes made me fall in love with it.

I just need a correct insert to make it perfect. One of my targets for the year to come...

Show us yours!

Best,

Nicolas

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5508

The Rolex Submariner reference 5508 represents the No Date series within the Submariner model range. Produced from 1958 to 1962, this reference is distinguished by its black dial that has developed spider patina over time.

The 5508 features a 37mm stainless steel case fitted with an acrylic crystal and rotating bezel. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters. The automatic Cal. 1530 movement provides 42-48 hours of power reserve. The watch is paired with a steel bracelet.

This reference appeals to collectors focused on vintage Submariner variants from the late 1950s and early 1960s production period. The spider patina dial condition represents a specific aging characteristic that develops over decades. Within the No Date Submariner lineup, the 5508 occupies the position of a four-year production run reference with the Cal. 1530 movement.

Here's my 5508, with a flawless mirror gloss gilt tropical dial, and original tropical "long 5" insert. Enjoy :)

Great watches amigo Nicolas! Though lacking the strong image of their Big Crown cousins, these SC no guards got the charm and distinction of a timeless design. You already know this 5508 gloss with exclamation dot and the big Rolex inscription bracelet clasp. It is one of my most beloved timepieces! By the way, I m still looking for a correct dial for my other 5508 to be able to fully enjoy it! Great thread! Un abrazo mi estimado amigo!

... I have shown here some time ago, my first 5508 with a very bad dial (replacement), which keeps me off completely enjoy it. Case, movement, etc are very nice, but dial is the "face" of a timepiece and regretably is not good. Will see what I can do with it in the future. All the best my dear friend! Un abrazo afectuoso, desde las calurosas Pampas! Abel.
