about 3 years ago i purchased my first ever Rolex, a 1964 1002 non date oyster and found it a bit small at 34mm, but it, along with many other people here, taught me to appreciate Rolex as a brand i should be adding to my theme. in the last 2 weeks i have been lucky enough to buy 2 different models from 1964, the first to arrive is this one,a 5513 submariner with rivet bracelet.

Nicolas has already seen one of the sellers pics and pointed out that it hasnt got a gilt dial. whilst a true purist would only look for a gilt dialled model, i am a realist and appreciate that so many will now have service white text dials on them that i would be happy to own one with a service dial. there is obviously a marked price difference which also helped me decide.

the dial is a swiss - T<25 metres first item and has some patina to it so i think it was changed quite a number of years ago along with the hands. the bezel insert is original and has faded to grey. the bezel is very stiff so i may send it to my ex Omega and rolex trained watchmaker to get the dial turning and even consider a new bezel insert (oh no i hear you gasp). the watch is in very good condition all over so i cant understand why the bezel doesnt turn, it turns a bit then my fingers are in great pain so i move it back. perhaps as i'm not going to go diving it is not such a bad thing for it to be secure on the watch.

it may not be 100% original, but i like it which is the main thing. enjoy some pics i took today and movement pics the seller took.

i'll leave the wristshot until friday.

i hope you enjoy the pics and i also hope there are not too many pointers into how incorrect it is smile

the model i'm waiting for is a world apart. its a 2 tone 1603 with white roman numeral dial. i'm tempted to change the dial for a black one with gold indices and hands, but thats for another post.

About the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 1002

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 1002, while sometimes associated with the Explorer 5500 due to shared case components, is fundamentally an Oyster Perpetual model. This reference represents a more understated and accessible entry within the Oyster Perpetual line, often featuring a simpler dial configuration compared to its sportier counterparts. It shares the robust Oyster case construction, emphasizing durability and water resistance, characteristic of Rolex's core offerings during its production period. The 1002 is recognized for its clean aesthetic and reliable automatic movement, making it a foundational piece in the brand's catalog.

This reference is housed in a stainless steel Oyster case, typically measuring 34mm in diameter, though variations in case size can be observed. It is powered by an automatic movement, most commonly the Rolex Caliber 1570, or earlier the Caliber 1530, known for its reliability and precision. The movement operates at 19,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The crystal is typically acrylic, contributing to its vintage appeal and ease of maintenance. The solid case back further enhances its water resistance, a hallmark of the Oyster Perpetual series.

For collectors, the reference 1002 appeals to those seeking a classic, time-only Rolex with a strong emphasis on original design principles. Its straightforward presentation and robust engineering make it a versatile choice. While less flamboyant than some other references, its enduring design and mechanical integrity ensure its place as a desirable vintage Rolex. Variants exist with different dial finishes and hour marker configurations, offering subtle distinctions for the discerning collector interested in the nuances of vintage Oyster Perpetual models.

Congrats!

It looks great, has the ghosty gray look which is fantastic and rivet is the perfect companion to the whole package, it looks better without a gilt dial, wear her in health. S

thanks my friend,   i’m...

thanks my friend, im a happy bunny even though its not a gilt dial. i sort of agree with Salman that it looks better with the white text. im puzzled by the bezel. ive unclipped it and oiled underneath despite it being spotless, but i still cant turn it. it has had a new plexi so i suppose its possible that it is a few microns too big. what cant turn also cant fall off so i wont lose it whether i would use this on a summer holiday i dont know, but i cant afford holidays, i go to gtgs instead

maybe i will. i cant...

maybe i will. i cant think of many other brands still to get. i have also seen a beautiful tropicalised 5513 from 64 which looks stunning with patina to die for. i could live with 2 of them i have my eyes on a grand seiko chronometer. they are not easy to find so it would be worth obtaining it. some of the highest build quality of the period. best G
