There are watches which require a lot of time before finding yours.

Not that the Milgauss is a rare watch, but the one which speaks to you is much rarer.

I had the same problem with the Rolex 1655 Explorer II. I saw many before falling on mine.

Back to the Milgauss, 1019, my most important criterion is the condition of the dial. Most of those I saw were too clean or cold ( black ) or in so so condition ( silver ).

When I found mine, its owner ( Patrice ) didn't want to sell it, which I perfectly understand.

So, I waved a lot between the black and the silver.

My preference goes for a Cern dial. This one, from 1967.

The fact that it doesn't have any luminous material is the raison d' Γͺtre of this watch, which is a bonus.

So, this is my first choice.

Then, a nice silver with a warm patina would make my day. Such as this one, belonging to Patrice.

And, to end, this one belonging to our dear Tyler.

Definitely on the top of my hunting list for 2017.

And you, which is / would be yours?

Best,

Nicolas

About the Rolex Rolex ROLEX, EXPLORER II FRECCIONE , REF. 1655 Ref. 1655

The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655, often recognized by its distinctive orange 24-hour hand, was introduced as a tool watch for speleologists and polar explorers. It offered enhanced legibility in low-light conditions and a fixed 24-hour bezel to distinguish between AM and PM in environments where day and night cycles are obscured. This model stands apart from its GMT-Master sibling by focusing on a specific utility rather than multiple time zones, making it a specialized instrument within the Rolex professional line.

This reference features a 39 mm stainless steel case, housing the automatic Caliber 1575 movement. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. A robust acrylic crystal protects the black dial, which is characterized by its luminous hour markers and the prominent orange 24-hour hand. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters, suitable for its intended robust use.

Collectors value the 1655 for its unique aesthetic and its position as the original Explorer II. Its fixed bezel and distinctive hand set differentiate it from later Explorer II iterations and other Rolex sports models. The reference appeals to those who appreciate purpose-built watches and the early design language of Rolex's professional series, representing a specific chapter in the brand's history.

I know very, very little about the Milgauss (anti-magnetic and that's it) in particular and Rolex generally (I do own one, from recent times); except for what I read in the great posts here. But CERN-is that in reference to the Super-Collider?

......sometimes the black...sometimes the silver....then the black.......then the silver....... In the end, the watch chooses you..... I have come to believe that the 1019 is one of teh very coolest vintage Rolex around. It took me 5 years to decide for sure that i wanted one, but now the watch is on my platinum list....the list that means a watch is permanent collection material. Silver dial is more in keeping with the scientific style of the watch. The black dial is just a lot cooler. And that
