Echi's original post sparks a fascinating discussion on the Rolex Explorer's evolution, particularly focusing on the 39mm reference. This thread delves into the subtle yet significant design and technical distinctions that define different generations of this iconic tool watch. Echi's perspective highlights the unique charm of the 'oddball' 39mm model, prompting a community-wide comparison with its 36mm and 40mm counterparts.

Would it fit 7.5 inch wrist, what size is yours in photo?
Feel vindicated after the intro (return) of the a larger Explorer, have the MKI 39 -- like the 36, but 39/40 is good too!
It seems to me that our version is more oddball. Hands were heavily criticized as I believe that they were unchanged from the prior 36 as they migrated to the 39. Echi? I really like the new 40mm, I imagine that Rolex will run with it for a lengthy period of time...
✅Modern size ✅Matte black dial ✅Full lume ✅"Explorer" text at the bottom No other modern explorer has all 4 above. Sure, more PR and AR under crystal would have been nice, but not a deal breaker without them ...
(1) matte vs gloss dial, (2) location of the "explorer" text, (3) presence of the Rolex crown at 6 o' clock on the new one, (4) more PR on the new one, (5) AR coating on the new one (I think!) etc. They may have made some modifications to the bracelet/clasp as well, but I've to look at it more closely.
I’ll join you. Enjoy!
