For many the 6263 Big Red is an iconic Daytona and it certainly has a lot going for it. For me, aesthetically it is hard to beat.

16520 marks a major departure - automatic, sapphire crystal, etc. Yet it seems to retain vestiges of vintage elements from the Daytonas that preceded it.16520, unlike the steel Daytonas to come has considerable variety in the dials and bezels.

116520 although aesthetically much like 16520 is more modern - hack feature, Rolex movement, 70 hour power reserve, and 904L steel (which i believe is new?). I like the fact that this dial is unlike any steel Daytona dial before or since with the silvered circles in the registers.

116500 - The ceramic bezel is both incredibly beautiful and scratch resistant. Also has improvements in the bracelet which started with the late 116520s. Clear to see a similarity with 16520 dial in the registers. Overall an amazing watch!

So, OK what's my order of preference to wear? I am sorry but I can't give a fixed order because I truly love them all and my preferences change as I wear therm.

I am interested in what my fellow Purists think.

I am also indebted to amanico whose post on black dialed steel Daytonas inspired me to write this post. So, thank you amanico!!

Best, patekova

About the Rolex Daytona Ref. 6263

The Rolex Daytona reference 6263 represents a significant evolution within the Daytona chronograph line, distinguished by its screw-down pushers and the introduction of a black acrylic bezel. This reference, produced during the 1970s, is part of the manual-wind era of Daytonas, preceding the automatic movement versions. It is recognized for its robust construction and enhanced water resistance compared to earlier non-Oyster models, making it a practical choice for daily wear while retaining a classic aesthetic.

This reference features a 37mm stainless steel case, housing the Valjoux 727 manual-winding chronograph movement. The Valjoux 727 is an updated version of the Valjoux 72, known for its reliability and precision. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal and offers a water resistance of 50 meters. Its power reserve is approximately 45 hours, typical for movements of this period, providing consistent timekeeping for extended periods between winding.

For collectors, the 6263 is notable for its blend of vintage charm and improved functionality. It appeals to those who appreciate the design language of early Daytonas but seek the added security of screw-down pushers. Variants often include different dial configurations, such as the silver dial with black sub-dials or the reverse "panda" dial, which contribute to its diverse appeal within the vintage watch market. The black acrylic tachymeter bezel is a defining characteristic.

Starting with the 6263. My 16520.

6263 ahead of all for sure even if its successor 16520 in black dial Patrizzi version also gets my vote. I am not a fan of 116520 for I prefer the dial of 16520 by far (the one of 116520 leaves me cold as it lacks charm to my eyes but it is a question of personal taste). As for the 116500 all my friends tell me that I should succumb but I resist so far πŸ˜‰

As for your question, my answer would be 16520 first, then 16500, which as you said, is very close ( dial ), and 6263, yours being in top condition. BUT I am not very qualified, here, as I am not a big Daytona Fan. I guess that a Daytona fan would answer 6263 first, then 16520 and then 16500. And an even bigger fan would also mention the 116520. The 16520 for me is ideal in that sense that it is a kind of best of both words: Some links to Past, a touch of modernity, and a big feeling of quality.

And it would appear like me you have a preference for white dial Daytonas. I would certainly always go Vintage first then 16520 and then Ceramic bezel for the modern every day Daytona. I love all Daytonas and it is these little devils which are responsible for my watch addiction. Here is my line up of preferred Daytonas. M.

Any steel Daytona is great. Each generation has it's own Pros and Cons, no one model is perfect. I guess the best comparison of the Daytona would be the Porsche 911. After many variations, there is still similarities among all the generations.
