Amanico revisits the classic Rolex Daytona Ref. 16520, pondering the timeless dilemma of choosing between the black and white dial variants. Having previously opted for the white dial, the author now contemplates acquiring the black dial to complete a coveted duo. This post showcases a friend's impressive pair, igniting a community discussion on the appeal and collectibility of these iconic Zenith-powered Daytonas.

The Rolex 6239 represents a black dial variant within this reference, produced from 1963 to 1969. This reference occupies a specific position in Rolex's chronograph offerings of the period, distinguished by its black dial configuration and manual winding operation.
The watch features a 37mm stainless steel case fitted with a fixed tachymeter bezel and acrylic crystal. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters. The manual winding movement utilizes the Valjoux 72 caliber, providing a 45-hour power reserve. The timepiece is completed with a leather strap.
This reference appeals to collectors focused on vintage Rolex chronographs from the 1960s production era. The black dial variant offers an alternative to other dial configurations within the 6239 reference range. The manual winding Valjoux 72 movement and 37mm case size reflect the technical specifications typical of this production period.
I have the new black one and I’m on the 4 different lists for the withe one. Regarding the 16520 I like them too but way over my budget.
... is the only way to resolve the dilemma! You should hunt your black! Definitively!! Buena suerte en la caceria amigo mio! Abrazos! Abel
Rolex Zenith Daytona 16520
I’ve owned both — not as the result of searching but by fortuitous circumstances and friends seeking to get out from under them. And I sold both — without regrets, because I found the visibility of the dials to be amongst the worst of any chronographs I’ve owned. Great watches; great place to “store” $10,000; generally loved; but not for me. Cazalea
the AD who sold it allowed me to swap out to black dial and haven’t looked back since
The 16520 is still yet to have its day. M.
