Miranda shares a profoundly moving story about his Rolex Daytona 16520, a watch that transcends its material value to become a symbol of love and an eternal bond between a father and son. This post delves into the emotional significance of a timepiece, gifted under poignant circumstances, and its role as a family heirloom.

Let me tell you about a watch, which is more than a watch....... it is a symbol, of love and an eternal friendship, of a father and son's bond

Not sure where to begin , perhaps a difficult post to write, but one that many will feel an affinity with,

My love of watches was to my father utter madness, he thought I was a nut job!

My beginnings were very humble, my father worked as a bus driver and then before he retired in a factory making bread. His watch was given to him by his father in law as a wedding gift, a Pierpoint, Swiss made...this was something that was mark of a great watch, so when I got my first "Swiss" watch, a Roamer Rotodate automatic, that should have been the end of the chapter for watches. Of course for me, this was just the beginning....

He never understood the addiction, and always thought I was mad!
He saw my collection grow and always said that they were out of his league. Then six years ago my mother passed away and he came to live us. Maybe a little of my addiction rubbed off on him.....he used to borrow my Panerai! I knew he loved it, but still thought the price was nuts.

Then about two years ago, he saw me constantly looking at the Daytona, a 1989 L series, a rare one, with four line and 200 bezel. He asked me why so obsessive, when I already had a watch just like it. I explained the subtle differences of Rolex collecting and that it was the same year that I graduated.

He never said a word, just nodded. Then I saw the watch was sold......typical I thought, just when I see one come up, its gone.

You know what is coming ,he bought it. The most expensive item he had ever bought in his life. I was supposed to receive it on my birthday, but he passed away from lung cancer just two months before my birthday.

This is no ordinary watch, it is a gift of love between father and son, between best friends. And one day I hope my son will wear it with the same pride and love that I do.

About the Rolex Ref. 16520

The Rolex Cellini reference 16520 is a notable example of the brand's dress watch offerings, distinct from its more robust sport models. This particular reference represents a period where Rolex explored more refined and understated designs, catering to a clientele seeking a timepiece suitable for formal occasions. It stands as a testament to Rolex's versatility in watchmaking, showcasing a different facet of their design philosophy compared to their Oyster Perpetual line.

This reference features a case crafted from stainless steel, measuring 40mm in diameter. It is equipped with an automatic movement, specifically the Caliber 4030, which is based on the Zenith El Primero. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is rated for a water resistance of 100 meters. The fixed tachymeter bezel is a characteristic feature.

For collectors, the reference 16520 appeals to those interested in the evolution of Rolex's dress watch designs and their use of external base movements. Its production run from 1988 to 2000 places it within a specific era of Rolex manufacturing. The black dial and Oyster bracelet contribute to its overall aesthetic, making it a recognizable piece within the Cellini collection.

Very moving story and I can fully relate. My father gave me his Explorer 1016 when I was 14 and I will never part with it. So many stories flash by when I look at the watch!
