Christianch proudly shares his acquisition of the Rolex Day-Date II Rose Gold 218235 with a diamond and ruby dial, a model recently discontinued by Rolex. He offers a personal review, comparing it to the new Day-Date 40mm and his 36mm platinum Day-Date, providing valuable insights into its unique aesthetic and wrist presence.

Just happy to share my latest dream purchase: the Rolex Day-Date II Rose Gold 218235 Diamond Ruby dial.
I know that Rolex has now discontinued this model so it was the right time to get one of the last available.

This particular dial was not as widely produced and very few boutiques had it available in stock. I suspect that it was due to the very bold spirit of combining diamonds with ruby.  (but apparently not to bold for Roger Federer at Wimbledon  rolexblog.blogspot.ch   )

What to say: I am absolutely in love with the watch. I understand that it might not be for everyone but I really enjoy
the diamond/ruby combinations and the black dial. The new Day-Date 40mm didn't seem as interesting - even the tone of the ever rose gold is more faded. Now to the photos:

I don't have a huge wrist size and the day-date II wears big but I still think that it fits reasonably well. Obviously you do have
a lot of presence on the wrist due to the case construction and this particular dial won't go unnoticed.

The new day-date 40mm in rose gold with baguette diamond is much more discrete.
It comes both in this light champagne dial but also in dark brown.

Gone is (for now) the black dial and the ruby option.  Size-wise it might
be more appropriate to many and this is why Rolex changed. To be noted that the new movement offers a lot more: from power reserve to several patents.  Yet to me it wasn't as convincing as the day-date II

Here is a comparison with my other day-date: 36mm. The platinum 36mm is certainly more discrete and a very different watch (in terms of look, the feel is similar as both weight the same)
both are very versatile -- the platinum a bit more as it is less likely to draw much attention.

The day-date II still fits well under the shirt cuff.

The everose gold of rolex really stands out and looks different (but always gorgeous) depending on the light.

Here at the sun:

This watch might not be a good choice for these that feel that "less is more" and value discretion
first yet it still an outstanding piece for these that want something very different -- yet reliable and versatile as every rolex.

I hope that you enjoyed this short review: given the new day-date 40mm I think that the day-date II still deserves some love as an iconic rolex with a very bold spirit.

About the Rolex Day-Date II Ref. 218235

Rolex Day-Date II Reference 218235

The Day-Date II reference 218235 represents Rolex's enlarged interpretation of the Day-Date concept, featuring a 41mm case size that distinguishes it from the traditional 36mm Day-Date format. This reference falls within the Day-Date II series, which was produced from approximately 2009 to 2019.

The watch features a 41mm rose gold case with smooth bezel configuration and sapphire crystal. Water resistance extends to 100 meters. The automatic caliber 3156 movement provides 48 hours of power reserve. The timepiece is fitted with the President bracelet, maintaining the integrated bracelet design associated with Day-Date models.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking the Day-Date's dual calendar display in the larger 41mm format and rose gold construction. The 218235 occupies a specific position for those preferring precious metal cases with smooth bezel presentation. The ten-year production window from 2009-2019 establishes this reference within the modern Rolex catalog structure.

I didnt realize the new everose gold is more champagne in color until I see your comparison pics. I prefer the everose color on yours :) Ruby and Diamond colors match this everose gold color well, I like it too :) Congrats once again and enjoy your new watch in the best of health! You are building a very nice collection! Bravo! Cheers robin

Something very special about rose gold and rolex everose is pretty special (even the new day-date tone)

All Rolexes are beautiful, but some more beautiful than others. The DD2 for me was out of proportion to the original 36mm, that being said since the new 40mm on it's way the proportions are truer to the original design. I have a new 40mm in yellow on order, but I've always been partial to rose and will have to see both before I make my final decision. Enjoy your new DD2, I must also say also during the course of this conversation that I hate the "blocky" cases of the Submariner etc., that's why

Hello Jeffrey, Thanks for your comments! The yellow gold 40mm is a great choice (see photo, I did try it too and think that with the new black dial is really stunning) but obviously the rose gold is a fantastic choice too !!! About the Day-Date II : obviously Rolex knows better and decided to go to a more reasonable 40mm perhaps because the sales of the day-date II were not moving ..but I still think that the day-date II is not too that big and 1mm difference is not that big. It is an iconic pie

As you say the one mm difference is almost undetachable, but it's the balance of the design overall that truly makes the difference. Also, the new movement and the new bracelets construction all add up a much more attractive product, but these are my observations and appeal to me, but they must also appeal to the hierarchy at Rolex, that NEVER does anything without throughly testing those changes. Ultimately it's a matter of personal choice... Jeff

Hello Jeff, I agree that the overall balance is indeed different - I think it has to do with the case construction that is somehow slimmer too so it is not really about the 1mm but as you suggest a number of improvements (including the movement of course). Rolex probably has a lot of data and probably since its launch in 2008 the day-date II didn't fly as much as they wanted. I have heard that the reason for the changes are also driven by making it more of a unisex model vs. the day-date II that
