Penfriend presents a compelling visual comparison of two highly coveted Rolex Daytona 116500LN models, inviting the WatchProSite community to weigh in on their aesthetic preference. This article delves into the nuanced opinions of collectors, moving beyond market value to explore the subjective allure of the black versus white dial. Penfriend's thoughtful gesture of gifting these watches to his sons upon graduation adds a unique, personal dimension to this horological discussion.

The Cosmograph Daytona reference 116500LN represents a significant evolution within the Daytona collection, introducing a black Cerachrom bezel to the steel model. This reference succeeded the 116520 and quickly became a highly sought-after contemporary chronograph. It maintains the classic Daytona aesthetic while incorporating modern material technology for enhanced durability and scratch resistance on the bezel.
This reference features a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from Oystersteel, paired with a fixed black Cerachrom bezel with an engraved tachymetric scale. It is powered by the in-house Rolex Caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement known for its robust construction and precision. The movement offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, ensuring water resistance up to 100 meters.
Appealing to collectors interested in modern Rolex chronographs, the 116500LN is available with either a white or black dial, both offering high contrast against the black bezel. Its combination of traditional steel construction with advanced ceramic technology positions it as a key reference in the ongoing development of the Cosmograph Daytona line, bridging classic design with contemporary material science.
From my point of view i would take the black one. The white one is too white for me. Or to put it differently, the white is too "clinical" for me. I just dont like it. Creamy white, beige white, anything really, just not snow white. This is just not my thing. I was for years in the waiting list for the white one, when i saw it in person i switched imediatelly to the black one. I hope this helps. Cheers
Such a lovely idea… If I may ask and because you mentioned « first come, first served »: are you two sons twins? 🤭 🤣 Going back to your question: for me, the white one for its readability and its « difference » and cool factor. Also many people have more than one watch, so easier to have a white Daytona and another black (diver?) watch? And again, such a lovely idea : a father celebrating special moment with his sons and creating traditions and memories 🍾🥂 Cheers, Jerome
I wish I had this in the collection, but I didn’t like it at all in comparison to the black dial version which was/is a beautiful piece with bling character. After discontinuation and intro of ceramic bezel, I appreciated the white dial for its own unique character. But prices I think a bit unreasonable afterwards. C’est la vie.
...she loves the black dial version as, to quote her, "It matches my little black dress" while she smiles at you in such a seductive way it would melt the Swiss chocolate bar in your pocket. Now am not sure if you gentlemen are like me, yet the thought of my wife wearing her little black dress, and yes the Daytona....
Still, i would prefer the black one Cheers
would have thought different in your case...
