It is often said that the line of demarcation between vintage and modern is around 1985. So, 2499, 3448 and 3450 are generally considered vintage. 3940 and 3970 are generally considered to mark the beginning of modern. The modern era brings in more common use of sapphire crystals; also, display backs and quick set correctors for the 4 calendar functions (day, date, month and moon).

1985 is a purely arbitrary demarcation - please use any determinant that works for you to separate vintage and modern.

I love both vintage and modern.

I feel the 40s-50s represents a Golden Age of Watchmaking; but I feel the same way about the modern era, particularly 1995-present. Aside from the fabulous designs and complex mechanisms of modern Pateks, I love the robustness (sapphire crystals), see thru backs and ease of use. It takes a minute to set all 4 calendar functions on a modern perpetual chrono. Try setting all functions on a 3448/2499 - good luck and be sure to allot plenty, and I mean plenty of time. Also I love buying brand-new watches which come complete with everything and knowing that I will be the first to wear them.

Vintage watches have "a history" unique to each timepiece, a charm and charisma often lacking in modern. There are more dial variations within a reference adding to the exclusivity, but they are more delicate. If you have a mint vintage piece, you might feel as I do, reluctant to add any signs of wear or tear to it. Vintage watches are in general just not as reliable, but there are exceptions eg 27SC movements are extraordinarily reliable, accurate and durable.

So although I love both vintage and modern with an equal passion, from a wearing standpoint I almost always wear modern. They are in perfect condition (and I am a condition fanatic), usually have visible movements, are robust and easy to set, have scratch resistant crystals and are equally beautiful.

I look forward to reading the viewpoints of other Forum members.

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 2499

The Patek Philippe Reference 2499 is a highly significant perpetual calendar chronograph, representing a pivotal model in the brand's history of complicated wristwatches. It succeeded the Reference 1518 and introduced a larger case diameter and updated aesthetic, establishing a design language that would influence subsequent perpetual calendar chronographs from Patek Philippe for decades. The reference was produced in four distinct series, each with subtle variations in dial layout, pusher style, and case construction.

This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, most commonly yellow gold, though examples in rose gold and platinum are known. The case diameter is generally 37.5mm, housing a manual-wind movement, specifically the caliber 13''' Q. This movement integrates a perpetual calendar mechanism with a chronograph function, offering indications for day, date, month, leap year, and moon phases. The crystal is typically acrylic for earlier series and sapphire for later iterations.

The 2499 is highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity, complexity, and historical importance. It is considered a benchmark for vintage complicated Patek Philippe watches and represents the evolution of the perpetual calendar chronograph from the mid-20th century. The variations between the four series provide distinct collecting opportunities, with each series possessing unique characteristics that appeal to different connoisseurs.

A lot depends on what I am doing and where....

.....I have a share of modern and vintage and I tend to wear them all. I wouldn't say I have a preponderance for one over the other. However, as a daily wearer, I would tend to go modern whereas if i am going out for dinner or doing something special, I would tend to go vintage. Its a good question, though......I will re-think it and see if my instinctive response is fair.

Very interesting topic Patekova

I think that you summed-up several of these issues well. The vintage watches have a charm that I like to see from time to time (like some old cars). By the way, there is quite a diversity in that field. A rounder early model doesn't look like the flater surfaces of a 1960's 3448 for instance. By the way, it is interesting to note that some evolutions today are not welcomed whereas the changes from the 1940's to the 1970's was quite significant in terms of style. Now it is part of the brand's ric

Mark thank you your very interesting reply. I can see the dilemma in what watch to choose if

one wears a particular watch for a few months period. I guess you can kind of bond or "re bond" with a watch that way. My attention span is way too short to do that. I tell my wife I can never be faithful to one ... watch. I am constantly switching back and forth. Also, your reply makes me think I should have had 3 categories - vintage, modern and current production. Oh well. Best and thanks for encouraging me to initiate this thread, patekova

I love the look and wear of the vintage pieces , something I feel modern pieces do not have . But as Joe has said , it is personal prefernce . I love wearing my old calatravas or vintage rectangular pieces The size fits me and they actually represent good value. Julian

Thanks Julian for your reply and strong endorsement of vintage. I totally agree with you that Calatravas and rectangles are

excellent value. Rectangles were once the most desired and expensive vintage shape for time only watches. They have the great 9-90 movement, are beautiful, rare and a great bargain. I have none right now but am on the lookout for something mint and unusual. Best, patekova
