I find the Patek Philippe officer-style, hunter caseback, Retrograde Perpetual Calendars ref. 5160/500 and ref. 5160 quite fascinating.

But I sometimes wonder if this hand-engraved madness isn't a bit too much.

What do you think?

They all measure 38 x 11.8 mm and are powered by caliber 324 S QR, except for the more recent ref. 5160/500R-001, which is powered by updated caliber 26-330 S QR.

Best, Emmanuel

A/ REF. 5160/500

The distinctive elements of this reference are:

  • Blackened Breguet numerals
  • Specific hand-engraved motifs (different from ref. 5160) with a classical mix of volute and foliage patterns inspired by an early pocket watch in Patek Philippe’s museum collection
  • Ornate Patek Philippe scroll emblem engraved on the caseback.

B/ REF. 5160

Announced by Patek Philippe at BaselWorld in 2010, the ref. 5160 was released in a small, undisclosed number as part of its Rare Handcraft collection.

During its entire run, it is believed that less than 20 examples were made in 18K white gold, possibly even far fewer in rose gold.

The distinctive elements of this reference are:

  • Painted Roman numerals
  • Specific hand-engraved motifs (different from ref. 5160/500)
  • Calatrava cross motif engraved on the caseback

About the Patek Philippe Retrograde Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5160

The Patek Philippe Reference 5160 represents the brand's Retrograde Perpetual Calendar model in 18k white gold. Produced from 2006 to 2011, this reference combines perpetual calendar complications with retrograde displays in a precious metal case. The 5160 was offered exclusively in white gold during its production run.

The watch features a 38mm case crafted from 18k white gold with a polished bezel and sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters. The timepiece is powered by the automatic Caliber 324 S Q, providing 45 hours of power reserve. The watch is fitted with a leather strap.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a complicated Patek Philippe timepiece with both perpetual calendar and retrograde functions. The white gold case material and relatively compact 38mm diameter make it suitable for formal wear. The five-year production window from 2006 to 2011 establishes clear parameters for collectors tracking this specific reference within Patek Philippe's contemporary complicated watch offerings.
