Recently I had a chance to make a trip to Lyon and was delighted to learn that it is less than two hours by train to Geneva. I of course seized the opportunity to pay a much-awaited visit to Patek Philippe's Geneva Salon. I had wanted to visit the Patek Museum but unfortunately it was closed on Monday, which was the only day I could make the trip.

Nevertheless, I was received by a charming lady watch adviser Nayna who is extremely professional and knowledgeable about Patek's various references. The highlight was a visit to the fifth floor of the Salon to appreciate the grand complications and this more than make up for my disappointment.

The first thing that caught my eye - a classy chandelier at the lift lobby:

Looking out to Lake Geneva from the building's window, which reminded me of my 5089G (Geneva lakeside postcards in marquetry art, see bottom picture)

Near the entrance is a dome clock - I was told this was only a display item because it is slightly flawed, and therefore not for sale....

First on stage is a 5160G with some marvelous engraving - this was the first time I saw this model in the flesh and put it on the wrist. Was I foolish to pass over it two months ago?

Then, a piece that sang to me, literally - the 5178G. I love the enamel dial and the Breguet indices. I had taken a video of the chime but sadly, could not load it from my smart phone onto the Purist site sad

This model comes in two sizes - 40mm and 38mm. I prefer the larger version and therefore, than the old 5078

Followed by the 5374P, a new model replacing the 5074, if I am not mistaken

And a 5372P - this model has two dials - one in rose gold and one in blue. Somehow the rose gold dial seems more subtle to me

And the grand finale - a 5208P, an (instanteneous) perpetual calendar minute repeating (monopusher) chronograph

I am starting to save up smile   Guess what is my next target?

Cheers
Sam

PS - Here is the 5089G

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 5074

The Patek Philippe Grand Complications reference 5074 is a minute repeater with cathedral gongs, distinguished by its unique case and dial design which shares some aesthetic similarities with the reference 5070 chronograph. This reference represents a significant offering within Patek Philippe's highly complicated timepieces, focusing on acoustic horology with its sophisticated chiming mechanism. It was introduced as a successor to earlier minute repeater models, offering a contemporary interpretation of a traditional grand complication.

This reference features a substantial case, typically crafted from precious metals. The movement powering the 5074 is an automatic caliber, known for its intricate construction and the clarity of its minute repeater function, enhanced by the cathedral gongs which provide a longer, richer chime. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, allowing a clear view of the dial and protecting the complex mechanics within.

The 5074 appeals to collectors seeking a highly complicated Patek Philippe minute repeater with a distinctive presence. Yellow gold variants were introduced around 2002, followed by rose gold in 2005, and platinum in 2009. Production for this reference concluded around 2015, making it a sought-after piece for those appreciating its specific design language and advanced horological capabilities.

Hi Sam, glad that you had a great trip and happy that you shared your experience at the Salon with us !

Next target must be a MR, right ? There are so many meaningful MRs for you to choose from. Perhaps a pair of MRs ?! Cheers, Gordon p.s. The 5089 marquetry piece looks wonderful!

Minute repeater timepieces are a Grail. The most wonderful complication for me. The fact to be able to hear the time and not only read it is so poetic. Hope you enjoyed your Geneva and PP flagship tour a lot

Best wishes Alkiro
