“horology_ancienne” !  What a beautiful 5970 he has !  How do you  like this watch and his thoughts on it ?  Please help to stop him from lurking !

From “horology_ancienne“:

Rightfully, the 5970 is considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best watch ever made. Not often a watch can brag of such an intense cult following. While I can hardly confess to support the notion that the crown belongs to the 5970, I can certainly admit that it surely rests in the top few references of all time across all brands. I make no mystery in the pole position belonging to the 2499 in my books. But the grandson is, well, powerful. The sheer joy of strapping one to the wrist is ineffable. It carries unbelievably balanced proportions in both case and dial design that only the very few can boast of. Simply put, it’s one of the very best watches of all time belonging to the most important family of references Patek Philippe has ever made. It’s the watch of today and the watch of the future!

Delightfully collectible in all regular production metals (because it’s just that good), the 5970 has a few trouvailles that makes this reference astonishingly even more interesting to hoard than it already is. Be it in the form of piece uniques, “vintage collection” end-of-run sets or limited special pieces, there are some exceptionally beautiful variants out there. Present is one of them. A yellow gold, champagne dial, tour de force. My unique commission. I requested a set of four 5970s all enjoying the same dial configuration bar the colour. Rose & black, yellow & champagne, white & salmon and platinum & blue. Contrary to popular believe this was not an “end-of-series” set but rather my commission.

Forget the photos. It’s oh so much better than the pictures might suggest. A real masterpiece. The champagne dial is remarkably special and wonderfully compliments the yellow case. Now I won’t bore anyone with going into 5970 aesthetic details that many have already covered but the presence of dot hour markers works very well and opens the dial just a little more. Which leads to the single Roman numeral, proudly sitting at 12 o’clock, emblematic of amongst the very best Patek has to offer.

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 2499

The Patek Philippe Reference 2499 is a highly significant perpetual calendar chronograph, representing a pivotal model in the brand's history of complicated wristwatches. It succeeded the Reference 1518 and introduced a larger case diameter and updated aesthetic, establishing a design language that would influence subsequent perpetual calendar chronographs from Patek Philippe for decades. The reference was produced in four distinct series, each with subtle variations in dial layout, pusher style, and case construction.

This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, most commonly yellow gold, though examples in rose gold and platinum are known. The case diameter is generally 37.5mm, housing a manual-wind movement, specifically the caliber 13''' Q. This movement integrates a perpetual calendar mechanism with a chronograph function, offering indications for day, date, month, leap year, and moon phases. The crystal is typically acrylic for earlier series and sapphire for later iterations.

The 2499 is highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity, complexity, and historical importance. It is considered a benchmark for vintage complicated Patek Philippe watches and represents the evolution of the perpetual calendar chronograph from the mid-20th century. The variations between the four series provide distinct collecting opportunities, with each series possessing unique characteristics that appeal to different connoisseurs.

Amazing piece. The 5970 is my favorite non vintage Patek. A true exit watch for me.

If only.... Must be wonderful to have this commissioned piece, and as a set of four with three other iterations! Cheers, John
