Baron - Mr Red seeks community opinions on expanding his Patek Philippe collection, which already features vintage Calatravas, a 5110G World Time, and a 5070P Chronograph. He emphasizes a 'horizontal' collecting bias, focusing on diverse references rather than multiple variations of a single model. This article explores collector recommendations for complementary additions.

The Patek Philippe reference 5070, part of the Complications collection, marked a significant return for the brand to large-format chronographs. Introduced in 1998, it was the first non-perpetual calendar chronograph produced by Patek Philippe since the reference 1463, which ceased production in the early 1960s. Its design drew inspiration from a unique Patek Philippe aviator's watch from the 1940s, characterized by its prominent case and dial layout, yet reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. This reference established a new aesthetic direction for the brand's chronographs, moving towards more substantial case dimensions.
The watch features a 42mm case, initially offered in 18k yellow gold, housing the manual-winding Caliber CH 27-70. This movement, based on a Nouvelle Lémania ébauche, was extensively finished and modified by Patek Philippe, meeting the brand's stringent quality standards. It provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The dial, in this specific configuration, is black, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The fixed bezel frames the dial, and the watch is typically fitted with a leather strap.
Reference 5070 appeals to collectors interested in modern Patek Philippe chronographs that combine traditional movement architecture with a more contemporary case size. Its limited production run and the subsequent introduction of variants in other precious metals contribute to its collectibility. The reference represents a distinct period in Patek Philippe's chronograph history, bridging vintage inspirations with a new era of larger watch designs.
May a suggest a nautilus , an ellipse in yellow gold. The nautilus , the 38mm model. The one previous to the new model 5711a. As you have a chrono & world time , perhaps you need playboy watches of patek both a nautilus and ellipse. Cheers! Geross
.......I think they are iconic and have a really nice look on the wrist. Nauty is not for me. I know I am in a very small minority, but the watch doesn't appeal to me. Yes, Geross, I have mentioned the possibility of a vintage Ellipse before. I think that is a nice addition.
Get the one with eccentric seconds on the right side. White gold railroad black dial. I forgot the ref but saw it in bangkok , really nice. My opinion my suggestion. Cheers!
.....so many Ellipse styles to go for. I would need to go vintage
Indeed, and a 928 to go along with it. Preferably with Pasha seats.
I like your vertical/horizontal thing Joe I think I prefer the vertical collecting even if, in the end, it is the sensation I have in owning a watch that preveils, no matter the fact I may have a close looking watch already. I guess you would like to remain in a more reasonable price budget so I won't mention 3970 or 5970. You don't like the Nautilus either (I didn't at the beginning but when I tried it on... it was love at first "try"), which would have been my proposition. So, if upper budget:
