Amanico initiates a compelling comparison between two modern Patek Philippe World Time references, the 5110 and the 5130. His detailed macro photography and insightful analysis delve into the subtle yet significant differences in their dial layouts, finishes, and overall aesthetics, prompting a lively debate among collectors about which reference reigns supreme.
The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5130, introduced in 2006, is a World Time watch that succeeded the popular reference 5110. This model maintained the distinctive World Time complication, allowing for simultaneous display of time in 24 different time zones. Its design evolved with a slightly larger case and updated dial aesthetics, distinguishing it from its predecessor while retaining the core functionality that defines Patek Philippe's travel timepieces. It was produced until 2017.
The watch features an 18k rose gold case measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 9.8mm in thickness, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU movement. This ultra-thin movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The dial is silver or opaline with a guilloché center, protected by a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.
Reference 5130 appeals to collectors seeking a sophisticated travel complication from Patek Philippe. Its larger case size compared to the 5110 offered a more contemporary presence on the wrist, while its classic World Time mechanism remained a hallmark of the brand's technical prowess. The model was available in various precious metals, with the rose gold variant offering a warm aesthetic.
of the Guillochage. The Sunburst Dial doesn´t do it for me. Only the feeling of the pusher kept me away (so far) to get one. It was my first impression when I handled it and still can´t forget it. Always have to try it, when I get one in my hands ... :-( ... but it is so beautiful ... Oliver
to start, the extra 2 mm is very important to me ! Concerning the dial, I'm not a big fan of guilloché dials and I love the hour hand of the 5130
...plus, I like to travel "light"... I assume the 5110 weighs in at a bit less than the 5130 :^)
Great post. Patek makes the best true worldtimer, tradition and innovation. I like 5130, but love 5110!
I love all the Patek Worldtimers, especially because they have the 240 caliber movement which exhibits a very high degree of finishing. However, in different metals, I prefer different world timers... Yellow gold; I've only seen it in the 5110 and not 5130. They don't make a 5130 in yellow gold yet except as the 5131 which is another story. The 5110 in yellow gold is beautiful, and can be matched to a glossy black strap, matte black strap, and matt brown strap. White Gold; I prefer the 5130 by a
Finally decided on the 5130g. Personally I feel that the cities are a bit cramp for 5110 and also the hands are a bit short thus affecting its legibility. I like the 5130 scissor hands as it resembles the vintage worldtimer and overall more readible. The size did not affect me much as both sits well on my wrist. Conclusion , for aesthetics, the 5110, for practicality, the 5130. But both are very nice. Cheers !
