The reference 2497 was Patek Philippe's first serially produced center seconds perpetual calendar, powered by caliber 27SC Q. The case measures approximately 37 x 12.5mm.

The reference 2438/1 is a waterproof version of the 2497, with a screw-down case back.

Only 179 examples of both references combined were made during a 12-year run from 1951 to 1963 in two standard dial variations and two casemakers (Vichet & Wenger): 114 were the ref. 2497 and 65 were the ref. 2438/1. That total number is easily found because production was reserved for a specifically dedicated movement number range, starting at 888.000.

There are two major articles on Hodinkee concerning these references:

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 2438

The Patek Philippe Reference 2438 is a perpetual calendar wristwatch, distinguished by its water-resistant case. This reference is a rare variant of the perpetual calendar family, offering a robust construction while maintaining the classic Patek Philippe aesthetic for complex complications. It represents a significant development in the brand's perpetual calendar offerings, combining advanced horology with enhanced practicality.

This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, housing a manual-winding movement. The caliber is known for its intricate perpetual calendar mechanism, displaying day, date, month, leap year, and moon phases. The crystal is generally acrylic, contributing to its vintage character and water-resistant properties, a notable feature for watches of its era.

Collectors value the Reference 2438 for its rarity and its unique combination of a perpetual calendar with a water-resistant case, a feature less common in Patek Philippe perpetual calendars from this period. It appeals to those seeking a historically significant and technically advanced timepiece, representing a specific point in the evolution of complicated wristwatches from the manufacturer.
