Emmanuel, known as quattro on WatchProSite, delves into a fascinating and rarely seen Patek Philippe reference: the "Macau" Calatrava. His detailed post illuminates the historical context and unique design elements of this 30-piece limited edition, offering collectors a deep dive into a significant commemorative timepiece. This article ensures that a decade-old forum gem remains discoverable and valuable to new enthusiasts.

The Patek Philippe reference 5026 is a notable iteration within the Calatrava line, distinguished by its officer's style case and exhibition back. This reference represents a period where Patek Philippe explored variations on its classic dress watch aesthetic, offering a more robust and historically inspired design compared to some of its simpler Calatrava counterparts. It appeals to collectors seeking a blend of traditional watchmaking cues with a slightly more pronounced case profile.
This particular reference features a stainless steel case measuring 39 mm in diameter, housing the automatic caliber 30110. The movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours and is visible through a sapphire crystal exhibition case back. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal on the front and offers a water resistance of 60 meters, making it suitable for daily wear while maintaining its dress watch character.
Collector interest in the 5026 often centers on its distinctive case design and the limited editions produced, such as the 30-piece commemorative edition for the handover of Macau. These special editions highlight the reference's versatility and its role in marking significant historical events. The 5026 fits into the broader Patek Philippe catalog as an example of the brand's ability to reinterpret its foundational designs with specific historical or aesthetic considerations.
i dont think i seen one before, such a strange concept, but i do get the significance of that day.
I expected to see "8 giorni brevettato"!
And the warm, special dial looks good. The size suits some of us just fine (adore my ref. 5000 which is pretty much the same, I think).
but the 5026 has a flat bezel and the case is a little more angular, whereas everything is smooth and rounded in the 5000... Best, Emmanuel
Still, nice to see that this one exists. Best, Emmanuel
Have to say that I rather like how they balanced the small sub seconds with the plaque. I have been looking at the regular dial version after and it looked as if it had something missing after seeing the Macau one first. Not sure I would feel the same had I seen the regular first but while the regular would probably not be one I would consider, I could see the Macau one more 😊🤷🏻♂️
