In a testament to the enduring allure of specific references, patekova, a seasoned collector, shares their journey of acquiring not one, but two Patek Philippe Ref. 5970 perpetual calendar chronographs. This article delves into their personal reflections on the distinct character of the 5970P and 5970J, sparking a community-wide discussion on the rationale behind collecting multiple variations of a single, beloved reference. Their insights offer a unique perspective on the emotional and aesthetic drivers behind high-end watch collecting.

I thought to myself, platinum is platinum and in many ways at least for me it is the ultimate metal in a watch. But the thought of yellow never quite left me and so about a year later I began the search. As usual I wanted one that was mint unpolished and complete. One that I could wear immediately. When I was offered one that was double sealed I thought why not? But then after acquiring this ā€œneo vintageā€ marvel that might be the only DS in the World I vacillated back and forth as to what to do? Since I planned to wear the watch I knew it made much more sense to have a preowned one. I searched. I tried. Didn’t happen. I almost literally felt like the DS was calling out: ā€œ help, get me out of hereā€ and so yesterday I gave in to that thought and could not be happier.

I know it is a bit redundant to have 2 of the same reference. Makes much more sense to not have duplications, but as logical as that is, that is just not me. Eg  If I see a sweater I love I buy 4 of the same thing in different colors. Kind of silly, no?

Anyway, I think the P and J, which are the 2 rarest of the  standard production are so different in character that I feel almost like they are 2 different watches. Also it is my favorite  reference of the modern era. For me it is a perfect watch.

I am wondering which do you prefer, the P or the J?

And does it make any sense to you at all to own 2 5970s, versus eg a 5970 and a 5370P, another fantastic watch?

I hope you enjoy the images and don’t mind my self reflections.

Best, Patekova

I get it. They have very different vibes, platinum and black dial, yg and white dial. Very nice combo. If I had to pick one likely the P for versatility and that it's platinum. Otherwise that J is really top class too!

Congratulations on adding the yellow gold version to your stable. They are both great watches, and the yellow gold version—to me—has a much more vintage, ironically almost casual feel. I have been collecting for so long that I could never count how many watches I’ve enjoyed. Everything from Swatches to grand complications. For many years now, however, the 5970 has been my favorite watch. For me, its proportions are perfect. It is complicated, but not overly so. And it is a joy to wear. In any of

That way, when you send one in for service, you won’t miss it as much. šŸ˜† The white dial is a bit more legible in my opinion, but I have always liked black dialed watches so my answer is again, both. 😁

I would be thrilled to see that happen.

I could get into deeper troublešŸ˜‚but I will do my best to resist. But if I were to add a third one, it would be most likely the G. For me the yellow has a warm vintage feel …. classy while the P is bold sporty and daring.
