Patekova, a respected voice in the WatchProSite community, initiates a compelling discussion by defining the 'modern era' of Patek Philippe and declaring the Ref. 5970 his unequivocal favorite. His perspective, rooted in the evolution of user-friendly complications, invites fellow collectors to share their personal modern Patek Philippe grails. This article synthesizes the community's diverse opinions and showcases the enduring appeal of these horological masterpieces.

I personally consider the modern era to be approximately 1986 to today. Why do I feel that way? With the discontinuation of of 3448/3450 and 2499 (watches whose functions could not be quick set) and the introduction of 3940 and 3970 (both of which are quick set), owning and occasionally wearing a complicated watch became much more user friendly …. modern , one might say. But please use any definition you like. Some say anything more than 25 years old is vintage. Some say the 5970 is neo vintage. The 5970 for me is a perfect watch and simply put when it is on my wrist I get a different feeling and higher level of happiness than any other modern watch I have ever owned or tried on, including 5004 which is rarer and much more complicated. I look forward to reading and seeing your thoughts and images. Best, Patekova

About the IWC Ref. 5004

The Patek Philippe reference 5004 is a highly regarded grand complication, combining a split-seconds chronograph with a perpetual calendar. This reference was a significant offering in Patek Philippe's catalog, representing a sophisticated blend of technical mastery and traditional watchmaking. It was produced in limited numbers, making it a sought-after piece among collectors of complex horology.

The watch features a 36mm platinum case with a thickness of 15mm, housing the manual-winding caliber CHR 27-70 Q. This movement provides a power reserve of 60 hours and is protected by a sapphire crystal. The dial is presented in silver opaline, offering clear legibility for its numerous indications. The case is water-resistant to 30 meters.

As a split-seconds perpetual calendar, the reference 5004 appeals to collectors who value both intricate mechanical solutions and classical design. Its production run from 1996 to 2012 saw various dial and case material iterations, though platinum was a prominent offering. The integration of two major complications in a relatively compact case underscores its appeal within the realm of high-end watch collecting.

The 5970 remains my favorite watch of any time period. In any of its iterations, including the “standard” ones . . .

They are all great and special. I never got one though and feel I missed the boat by now. The G was the one that was my personal pref.

I really know too little about Patek to answer your question properly, but a model I like a lot is the 5231. Is it the best modern PP? I really can't tell! (web photos)

As Patek has many different styles and designs that are very appealing and special. If we are able to attain and enjoy what we desire then we are blessed. Here are a couple of my preferences, alas I’m unable to share others in my collection at the moment, even though I’d love to. Maybe one day in the near future.
