I am due to retire in April next year but today, I tried on a watch that may make me postpone my retirement for another three months (any excuse to keep on working!smile). I have always liked the cushion shaped case of the 5940G, the allure of the Arabic numerals, the slimness of the case housing the attractive 240Q movement and I was quite surprised when Patek decided to discontinue the model after only two years in production (2014-2016). Surely two years in production is far too short for any model so either this watch will be very sought after in future or it will disappear into oblivion . The earlier yellow gold model differs not only due to the metal but it spots a railway minute track whereas the white gold models have lovely dots to indicate the minutes which I personally find more attractive. Most importantly, this watch today has passed the most important test in my opinion - it seems to suit my wrist perfectly. A penny for your thoughts smile

Best wishes,

Sham

About the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5940

The Patek Philippe reference 5940 is a perpetual calendar wristwatch presented in a cushion-shaped case. It offers a classic interpretation of one of Patek Philippe's signature complications, distinguishing itself with its distinctive case geometry that provides an alternative to the more common round or rectangular perpetual calendar offerings from the manufacture. The reference was initially introduced in yellow gold, with subsequent variants in other precious metals. It represents a refined option for collectors seeking a traditional perpetual calendar with a unique aesthetic.

The watch features an 18k white gold case measuring 37 mm in diameter and 8.6 mm in thickness, housing the ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 Q. This movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The silvery-white dial displays the perpetual calendar indications, including day, date, month, leap year cycle, and moon phases. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is water resistant to 30 meters.

Appealing to collectors who appreciate both horological complexity and distinctive design, the 5940 offers a blend of traditional watchmaking and a less conventional case shape. Its cushion case provides a comfortable fit and a notable presence on the wrist, while the perpetual calendar complication ensures its enduring relevance as a high-complication timepiece. The reference has been produced in various gold alloys, offering collectors choices within this specific model line.

I am also pondering this watch

I had thought it would be large but it fits perfectly. I like the legibility. It is definitely my next purchase. The only negative is the tonneau shaped case is not very popular. Round watches are the norm. Remember the 3970 in this case were terrible sellers when in the line up. Now they are highly sought after collectibles due to their limited production.

My current favorite...

...in any metal but yellow gold looks better on me. I love it because of its shape and slimness. The only thing that would make it perfect would be a shaped movement to fit the case but that will never happen...buy it!!

Yes I remember! :-)

Pateks tend to hold their value or appreciate when there are produced in limited numbers, a short time span rather than if they are popular. If you are serious about this watch, you should not wait too long since the last watch is about to leave Geneva for London, allegedly reserved for me while I decide what to do! Saying that there are a few dealers who still have this watch so all is not lost. The watch is a 37mm watch and although the official dimensions are 37 x 44, the 44mm includes the lu

Can't advise on the watch, but 3 months can be a very long time or short, depending ...

In the case of retiring, I vote for earlier rather than later - I was sitting in the top seat at my company and wish I'd gotten out sooner. Cazalea

I am quite an oddball :-)

as I actually love my job and the company so when I do finally retire, something in me will die too regrettably. I am only in the UK because of the love for the job and I intend to return home to Malaysia shortly after. However, my tiny watch collection will keep me smiling for many years to come.
