Watchlover42's recent acquisition of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5940 Perpetual Calendar highlights a discerning collector's journey to find the perfect balance of classic elegance and wrist presence. This article explores why the often-overlooked 5940, particularly in yellow gold, stands out as a compelling choice for those seeking a 'simple' yet sophisticated perpetual calendar, offering a fresh perspective on Patek Philippe's diverse PC offerings.

....but for me, it's one of the most beautiful PC references! After selling my 3970 some time ago (due to its proportions, it was rarely worn on my wrist), I started looking for the right "simple" but classic PC for me. However, the 3940 always seemed a bit too delicate for me, and the 5140 never quite convinced me. That's how the 5940 caught my eye. Due to its case shape, it has more wrist presence while still remaining very elegant. The metal color was a no brainer for me as I love yellow gold, especially for complicated watches. On Saturday I finally pulled the trigger and I can't be more happy with my new acquisition 😀

And here with it's distant relative from Germany 😉

About the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5140

The Patek Philippe Reference 5140 is a perpetual calendar wristwatch, succeeding the highly regarded Reference 3940. It maintains the classic Patek Philippe perpetual calendar layout, featuring day, date, month, leap year, and moon phase indications. The 5140 was introduced with a slightly larger case diameter than its predecessor, reflecting contemporary preferences while retaining a traditional aesthetic.

This reference is powered by the ultra-thin self-winding Caliber 240 Q, known for its micro-rotor construction which allows for a slender case profile. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The watch is presented in 18k white gold, rose gold, or yellow gold cases, measuring 39 mm in diameter, and is fitted with a sapphire crystal. It offers water resistance to 30 meters.

The 5140 appeals to collectors seeking a modern perpetual calendar with a direct lineage to Patek Philippe's established complications. Its production run from 2006 to 2019 saw various dial configurations, including opaline and silvery finishes. The watch is typically paired with a leather strap and a deployant clasp, consistent with Patek Philippe's classic offerings.

...love the movement, case shape, hands, numerals. May be one in my future if I ever get a 'modern' Patek. One of their best...

Have come to the same conclusion that the 5940 is a great shape for the modern era. Same proportions in 5950, but at least 5940 can be found more widely. Wear in good health! David

I’m at a point of consolidating toward a Patek PC. This 5940 would have been a very nice option if they had a P version, which I can’t find, interestingly. Anyway, really enjoy seeing these different versions of PCs👍🏽.

I love this watch too. Beautiful case, perfect dial. If you one day see me on here proudly showing off a Patek perpetual, it will probably be a 5940G.
