Patekova shares a deeply personal acquisition story, revealing how he broke his own collecting rules for the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496P. His candid reflection on balancing personal desire with market considerations offers valuable insight for any collector. This post sparks a discussion on the often-complex motivations behind acquiring a significant timepiece.

I must love the watch, it must be relatively difficult to obtain or be rare, and it must have IMHO a  â€śgood future” (whatever that means?). This watch ticks the first box to an extreme degree. On the other hand it is relatively easy to obtain at least compared to say 5711. Rare? - only if one equates rarity with a general lack of popularity and desire. “Good future” - I think this is very unlikely unless it has a relatively short run, low sales and somehow many years from now people start to love it, eg 5020. The P is already on its third dial iteration. This reminds me of 5270 where Patek keeps changing the dial in the hope of generating interest. So I bought it for the purest and simplest of reasons - I love the watch.

I wonder if anyone else out there actually likes this watch? Or possibly even owns one and if so with which dial?

Best, patekova

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5496 distinguishes itself within the Calatrava line by incorporating a retrograde perpetual calendar complication. This reference combines the classic aesthetic of the Calatrava with a sophisticated horological function, presenting the date on a retrograde scale that sweeps back to the beginning of the month. It represents a more complex offering compared to time-only Calatrava models, appealing to collectors who appreciate both traditional design and mechanical ingenuity.

This timepiece features a 39.5mm platinum case, housing the self-winding Caliber 324 S QR movement. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, with an interchangeable solid platinum back also provided. The dial is champagne in color, complemented by rose gold applied numeral date markers and other applied gold markers, all protected by a sapphire crystal.

For collectors, the 5496 offers a blend of Patek Philippe's enduring design language and its expertise in grand complications. Its retrograde perpetual calendar function, combined with the precious metal case, positions it as a significant piece for those seeking a technically advanced yet understated watch. The inclusion of two case backs and a platinum deployant clasp further enhances its appeal.

you love ! Always hard to predict the future. If you love a watch now and have the means, then you made the right decision. IMO, this is a well designed watch because: 1 - it has Patek DNA of understated elegance 2 - the simple baton hour (instead of numerals) markers balance off the otherwise busy dial if paired with numerals and make the dial attractive 3 - the retrograde hand is a great function Well done and enjoy it often !

I love its predecessor 5050. I think that the retrograde complication is lovely and the proportions of the dial just perfect. I know that, these times, these references are not so popular, but even Nautilus 3710 was not sought after 10 years ago. Best,

Buying a watch that you love will always have a very limited downside. Congratulations

A big congrats on acquiring a beautiful timepiece. I am a big fan of the 5496 and was fairly close some time ago in going for the brown dial P. What held me back was primarily my attachment to my 5960p as I could not justify having both in my box.... yes different kind of watches but too close for me... Now as to your reasoning in regard to Patek makes sense. No small commitments to purchase and important it ticks all boxes. However the most relevant box to tick that many overlook is the self as

The 5496P is a very under-appreciated watch at the moment, but it will become a classic after it is discontinued.

...amazing presence in person. The tiny, applied numbers are very special. My only concern is that it's just a bit too thick. Perhaps a 240 transplant? Even so, I am tempted. It's very nice...enjoy!
