Maltie initiates a compelling discussion, inviting collectors to weigh in on a hypothetical choice between three distinct luxury watches available at similar secondary market prices: the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196R, the Rolex Submariner 'Hulk' 116610LV, and the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 233.032. This scenario prompts a fascinating debate on value, aesthetics, and collecting priorities among enthusiasts.

The Rolex Submariner Date reference 116610LV represents a pivotal chapter in the Submariner s storied evolution, introduced in 2010 to commemorate the collection s 50th anniversary. This reference marked Rolex s bold departure from traditional aesthetics with its striking green dial and bezel combination, earning it the beloved nickname Hulk among collectors. Manufactured from 2010 to 2020, the 116610LV bridged the gap between Rolex s heritage diving watches and modern manufacturing excellence, incorporating the brand s revolutionary Cerachrom ceramic bezel technology while maintaining the fundamental DNA that made the Submariner an icon of tool watch design.
At the heart of the 116610LV beats the robust Caliber 3135, a time-tested automatic movement featuring 31 jewels and delivering a reliable 48-hour power reserve. This workhorse caliber incorporates Rolex s proprietary Parachrom blue paramagnetic hairspring, offering superior resistance to shocks and magnetic fields while maintaining chronometric precision. The movement s construction reflects decades of refinement, with a full balance bridge providing enhanced stability and the caliber s proven architecture ensuring long-term reliability. The sapphire crystal features anti-reflective coating for optimal legibility, while the case maintains the classic 40mm proportions that define the modern Submariner silhouette.
The 116610LV s most distinctive feature remains its monochromatic green colorway, executed through a sunburst green dial paired with a matching green Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert. This virtually scratchproof ceramic bezel represents a significant technical advancement over aluminum predecessors, offering fade resistance and enhanced durability. The Oystersteel case and bracelet showcase Rolex s mastery of 904L stainless steel, while the Glidelock clasp system allows for precise micro-adjustments without tools. Among collectors, the Hulk has achieved legendary status as one of the most recognizable and sought-after modern Submariner variants, representing the perfect synthesis of Rolex s innovative spirit and respect for horological tradition. Its discontinued status as of 2020 has only enhanced its desirability in the secondary market, cementing its position as a modern classic.
Elegant dial with Arabic numerals and the best finished movement, the only one that is visible!
because I predict it will be gone next year then the equation will be different but the other two....maybe will be relatively easier to get as time goes by....sorry to say but seems that’s the fact today. Plus, with your collection, you don’t need simple Calatrava or Lange at all since you have their highest end watches already. The Hulk is a different animal, although I got it recently, it’s special. Captured in Maui today at the Honolua Bay.
for a dress watch certainly the lange if compared with this Patek. I would say the Rolex is a completely different category. I think the Lange has the best package here, best finishing and they show the movement, compare it with the 215 ps. Now the dial is a matter of taste, so no real difference unless you have a preference. Case wise, I like the Lange case, perhaps a bit less elegant but gives a well built feeling. Size wise, I think the thickness size ratio is nice with both with probably a s
Undecided between 38.5 mm and 40 mm, but one of those is an easy choice for me amongst these three. John
