Irony of Fate... When I bought the Patek 5070 six years ago, I was quite happy and proud to have built a nice collection of modern Chronographs, as I already owned the Vacheron Les Historiques Chronograph salmon dial / platinum case, the Jaeger Lecoultre Duometre à Chronographe in platinum and the Lange Datograph, in platinum, too.

Among these " Big Four ", I only own the Patek 5070G, today, due to some unfortunate circumstances, to say the least... That's life.

Today, it is the 6th birthday of my 5070G. And that counts a lot for me. 6 years of common life, punctuated by good and bad moments, more often good than bad, truth to be told.

And if I cannot forget the three chronographs which left me, I can only like my Patek 5070G a lot.

Not that it is the finest among them, nor the most original, but the coolest, certainly.

The evidence of its coolness by the picture:

I will slowly re build my modern chronographs collection, and will soon include the Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter steel, and in a more long term the Duometre à Chronograph in white gold. But this 5070G helps me a bit to put a smile on my face, each time I strap it.

It was time to take a fresh picture to give justice to its coolness.

Maybe I can add " class " to describe it, too?

Indeed, in terms of coolness, the 5070 has an unexpected competitor, the 5960A, which haunts my brain quite a lot, since I discovered, thanks to Jester, that it was possible to remove the old looking bracelet to mount a strap, more in concordance with its spirit. One day, maybe, I will add this reference to my collection.

After all, owning a manual winding AND an automatic Patek Chronograph movement has a certain allure. Strangely, owning the 5070 helped me to realize that adding a 5960A would not be  bad idea.

And three Patek ( let's not forget my 5110P, which is another true treasure ) is better than two.

Best,

Nicolas

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.
