Nicolas, known as amanico on WatchProSite, initiates a compelling discussion around the Patek Philippe Ref. 3970P, a perpetual calendar chronograph that, despite its rarity, continues to captivate collectors. His original post, featuring stunning photography, invites the community to appreciate the elegance and charm of this reference, even as he personally leans towards its successor, the Ref. 5970P. This article synthesizes the community's nuanced perspectives on a highly sought-after Patek Philippe reference.

I am turning around these perpetual calendar chronos, at least on pictures as seeing them in person is quite rare.

Now, let's see the 3970P:

Even if my heart is taken by the 5970P, I can't deny this one has a lot of charm AND elegance.

Best,

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 3970

The Patek Philippe reference 3970 is a perpetual calendar chronograph, a complication central to the brand's heritage. It succeeded the highly regarded reference 2499 and served as a bridge to the later reference 5970. The 3970 was produced over an extended period, allowing for several series and subtle variations in its design, making it a significant model for collectors interested in the evolution of Patek Philippe's complicated wristwatches.

This reference features a 36mm case, commonly found in 18k white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. It is powered by the manual-wind caliber CH 27-70 Q, based on a Lemania ébauche, which offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a dial that typically includes subdials for the chronograph, perpetual calendar displays, and moon phases.

The 3970 appeals to collectors seeking a classic Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph with a traditional aesthetic and a historically important movement. Its long production run from 1986 to 2004 means that examples from different series, such as the first, second, and third, exhibit minor differences in dial layout and case details, providing distinct collecting opportunities within the reference.

But when you put both references side by side….which one will you take home with you? ;-) and no you can’t take both! Best Gatsby

Whilst I would say the 5970 to be, "as good as it will ever get"[probably]. 😆

I loved everything about it except for how thick it was. But if I could go back I would pick it up for sure. It’s up about 100k since I tried it on…your photo is great as always.

Between this, the 5970s and 5270s... we are blessed to have these many options.

I put one on my wrist. For me the proportions are all wrong and I just can’t get over it. Believe me I’ve tried. The nickname Burger for me fits. It just doesn’t sit properly for my eyes. I seriously appreciate it though. M.
