Sham1 initiates a compelling discussion on jump hour watches, focusing on the Patek Philippe 3969R and an Audemars Piguet minute repeater. His post highlights the enduring appeal of these complex timepieces, inviting collectors to weigh in on their preferences and the unique characteristics that define these horological marvels.
I have always been fascinated by jump hour watches and none more so than the 3969R issued in a limited edition of 450 pieces to commemorate Patek's 150th anniversary. Prices have remained firm and few are being sold with the complete set - box, papers and commemorative coin. Perhaps something to do with the watches being 28 years old! I am not a great fan of Audemars Piguet watches but there is one that I truly adore which is a jump hour, retrograde minute and even comes with a minute repeater. This is arguably a compliment to Patek and to the 3969R but the prices of both these watches are not that far apart even though the AP has more complications. Both may be part of the holy trinity but the truth is when it comes to resale value, Patek is in a different planet. Both are in relatively small sizes (Patek 27mm in width, AP 34mm)compared to today's norm which is actually a big plus for me personally.
Which would you choose if you had a choice?

The Patek Philippe Reference 3969 is a minute repeater wristwatch, distinguished by its tonneau-shaped case and jumping hour display. It was released as part of a series of special timepieces commemorating the brand's 150th anniversary in 1989. This reference represents Patek Philippe's commitment to traditional horological complications, presented in a distinctive and historically significant form factor that deviates from more common round cases.
The watch features a platinum case, measuring 33mm by 36mm, housing a manual-winding movement, the Caliber R 27 PS. This movement is known for its minute repeater mechanism and the jumping hour complication, which displays the hour digitally through an aperture. The crystal protecting the dial is sapphire, offering clarity and scratch resistance. The design emphasizes the intricate mechanics through its specialized display and the acoustic function of the repeater.
As an anniversary edition, the Reference 3969 holds particular interest for collectors of Patek Philippe's complicated watches and limited editions. Its production was highly restricted, with only a small number of pieces made, primarily in platinum. The combination of a minute repeater with a jumping hour in a tonneau case makes it a unique offering within the brand's historical catalog, appealing to those who value both technical sophistication and distinctive design.
Function wise AP contains more. Aesthetically Patek has a more interesting dial. Lineage wise, Patrk's 150th anniversary is more meaningful. For your smaller wrist, you need to decide which fits you better. Good luck with your decision! Cheers, Gordon
Another similar piece to add to the mix: FRANCK MULLER ref 2852HS - I've always coveted this one
They both would fit pretty well. I have tried on the 3969 but not the AP but at 34mm I doubt if size would be an issue. I was wondering if you or anyone else has experienced the sound of an AP minute repeater. I am familiar with the clarity of Patek minute repeaters but due to the price differential, I am assuming the AP will not sound as good. Is this a foregone conclusion or an incorrect assumption?!
That Franck Muller looks impressive, simple and minimalistic!
tempting ! There s is a good reason for that of course. Issue is whether you really would want to settle on an AP MR. Let us know what you decide. Cheers Gordon
that despite the AP being a minute repeater, the Patek would be the preferred choice. Perhaps, it is because this thread is in the Patek forum (I was unsure which forum to post this thread on but I thought I should give the Patek a fighting chance!!) Settling for an AP minute repeater really sounds non complimentary to AP I must say. How did the brand ever achieve the holy trinity status I wonder?!
