quattro's insightful post shines a light on the Patek Philippe Ref. 3418 and 3419, known as 'Convertible' models, highlighting their unique detachable lug design and stainless steel cases. This detailed exploration, complete with historical context and caliber variations, offers a crucial resource for collectors interested in these rare and distinctive vintage Patek Philippe references. His work provides a valuable foundation for understanding these often-overlooked 'tool watches' within the brand's storied history.

The Patek Philippe Reference 3418, launched in 1958, is notable for its 'Convertible' case design, a feature shared with Reference 3419. This design allows for the detachment of the lugs, facilitating a change between a bracelet and a strap by unscrewing the case back. This innovative approach to case construction distinguishes it within Patek Philippe's production of the era, offering versatility to the wearer.
Crafted exclusively in stainless steel, the case measures 35mm in diameter. The watch was originally supplied with a main metal bracelet. The production of Reference 3418 continued until 1962. It houses a manual-winding movement, consistent with Patek Philippe's horological standards of the period.
This reference appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's experimental case designs and its stainless steel offerings, which are less common than precious metal examples. The 'Convertible' mechanism represents a unique engineering solution for strap interchangeability, making the 3418 a distinctive piece in the brand's mid-20th century output. Its limited production run further contributes to its collectibility.
These references must be extremely rare! There are no examples to be found on Chrono24. Do you know of any estimates on how many of them were actually made?
I discovered their existence only recently and understand your interest. The models available today on C24 retail above €20k, which I really find to high even if their collectibility is undeniable.
I actually found 2 models on C24: a 3418 with Milanese bracelet in Switzerland and a 3419 with Beyer dial and leather strap in Italy. But they retail above €20k, which I really find to high even if their collectibility is undeniable. Best.
I was looking at a 5130R-020, that a dealer had on consignment for over a year. Having been born in Munich, that special edition would have been a great addition to my collection, but the price was far above of what 020s had ever been achieving at auctions in the past. So I waited. In the end it went back to the owner because the market for these kinds of watches tends to be smaller than the financial expectations of the sellers at times. It's a real pity, especially that I wasn't able to get on
I would love to be a customer.
But who knows what may come next (probably not in the near future, though)?
