amanico reflects on the first anniversary of owning his Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter, sharing a deeply personal account of enduring passion for a timepiece. His narrative goes beyond a mere review, exploring the emotional connection and daily wearability that has made this chronograph his most frequently worn watch. This article offers a compelling long-term perspective on the Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter's appeal and its place in a collector's life.

Time flies. I have  hard time realizing that it is already one year I am the happy owner of the 1858 Tachymeter.

I wrote a lot about this piece, yet. What I can add, though, is that it has been the watch I wore the most past year, and this year as well.

You know the story. You are convinced by a watch, you dream about it, you want it so badly. That is what happened with this Chronograph.

Love at first sight.

But love affairs, especially when it is love at first sight, can quickly turn in a bad way.

Not with this watch.

One year after, I like it more and more. Love is getting stronger, admiration, too.

That Montblanc went almost everywhere with me. If I didn't mess when I was at the Bank, I would have packed it for my trip in Hong Kong, in November.

Hamburg, where I picked it,

Paris, of course,

Italy, that was mandatory,

On my way back to Paris, the Montblanc facing the Mont Blanc...

In Normandy, during a week end.

At work, at the office...

Good moments, bad moments, tough moments... Life, in a word.

I had a lot of time to think about what I like in this watch. The movement, for sure, is the magic part. Without it, this Chronograph would not play in the same league, that is obvious.

The dial is the first thing you see. This soleillé blue is a marvel. The question I had was to know if with time passing, I would not get bored with it. After one year, I can answer NO.

The case is big, but comfortably sits on my wrist.

One thing I discovered is that this 1858 Tachymeter is a killer. It changed my perception on new additions. I am more demanding, now.

And it also convinced me to reduce my collection, to get more pieces of this vein...

And, to end, something important to me. It is just one of the finest chronograph I know, along with the Duometre and the Datograph.

Yes, after one year of ownership, I can say that it became a very important piece of my collection, and got a big place in my heart.

Best,

Nicolas

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.

I think I know exactly what you are saying. I also keep coming back to this one. The sub-dial hands alone are worth looking at.
