Jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) shares his live impressions of the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter in steel with a captivating blue dial, powered by the Villeret monopusher calibre 16.29. Despite concerns about its 44mm size on his wrist, his profound admiration for the watch's beauty and movement shines through, prompting a community discussion on wearing larger watches.

After Nico's wonderful review, I finally managed to get to see this in the metal. Oh man... am I in love with this blue dial and beautiful Villeret monopusher chronograph calibre 16.29!!

To be honest, my wrist is too small for this fine watch at 44mm but being a pilot watch and chronograph (i.e. thicker), I am tempted to say it is still quite "acceptable" for me even smile

Probably the sheer beauty of the watch is making forgo my mind and give in to my heart! I had always wanted a calibre 16.29 to add to my MB Villeret chronograph grand feu enamel with the calibre 13.21 but all the Villeret watches with the calibre 16.29 have been too big for me. As Nico said, the movement is already 38mm so a 40mm case won't work.

Some live pics to share. What do you guys think? Too big for me right?

Cheers
Robin

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.

First question: Do you really love it so much? Second question: If so, try to find a correctly sized strap, it may help. Wear it tight, this is the only way. Best, Nicolas

it is far too big for your wrist. I'm coming to Singapore in December - perhaps it would fit to mine... Best, Kari

BTW, I'm not saying that so that there is one more for me to have a shot at. It's too big for me as well, and I was offered one. Damn! It is so beautiful. But we can't have them all. Great photos, Robin.
