tgchi shares the exciting journey of acquiring their first A. Lange & Söhne, a Grand Langematik in yellow gold. This post beautifully illustrates the personal connection collectors form with their watches, highlighting the importance of a watch 'smiling back' and fitting one's aesthetic preferences. The narrative emphasizes the unique experience of finding the perfect timepiece after a thoughtful search.

I went to my AD today to view a watch that she had set aside for me to see. When leaving the house today, I had zero intention of making any purchases. This was to be a longer term hunt for my first ALS.

The reason my AD had set this particular watch aside is that she knew I had fallen in love with the Grand Saxonia (40mm) due to its size and simplicity. She also knew that for my first Lange, the patented date function would be a welcome, if not, required, attribute. In fact, I'm not sure if she would have let me buy my first Lange WITHOUT the signature Lange date ( and I'm not kidding).

At first, I was looking at a RG Grand Lange 1 that she had in stock. This is a terrific watch and I'm sure for many, would be the one. Somehow, I could not get past the overlapping circles on the dial, especially knowing of the newly designed Grand Lange 1 without the overlap. (Of course, the new Grand Lange 1 is a major coup, but alas, no where to be found).

I saw a YG Lange 1, which is a great watch, but also did not speak to me. It is a bit small for my wrist and I would prefer RG or WG in that piece. Again, the newly designed Grand Lange 1 would likely be more my cup of tea.

Enter the Grand Langematik (yg)... 40mm on black strap. I was immediately drawn to the size and symmetry of the watch. In addition, the watch has a black strap, which I find tempers the YG making it much more subtle. The signature Lange Date at 12 OClock is by no means an intrusion and its presence solves my dilemma.... a Grand Saxonia (that I love) without sacrificing the Date Function.

Most important of all, when I saw the watch and placed it on my wrist, it smiled at me in that way that we have all experienced... you just know. My wife was there as well and, if possible, she loved the watch as much as I!    Please welcome an "Ugly Duckling" to the family.  Sorry about the picture quality (phone camera)
