Hoseachandra's recent experience with a full Breguet service on his Heritage 8670 provides valuable insight into the brand's after-sales care and the practical considerations of luxury watch ownership. His subsequent contemplation of a square Cartier watch, specifically the Santos Dumont or Francaise, sparks a discussion on design preferences, movement choices, and the evolving role of quartz in high horology. This article explores the nuances of these decisions, drawing from community perspectives.

After 6 (yes, six) months of full service at Breguet. The service bill is also shocking smile but at least i have peace of mind knowing that every parts which have worn out have been replaced. So it came back like new. Here it is with blue Croc Delugs.

Now that i have rectangular (Reverso) and this tonneau Breguet, i want a square watch. And no one does it better than Cartier IMO. The question is, Santos Dumont or Francaise? I exclude Santos de Cartier because i don't like the "flowing " bezel and the dial looks flat, although the bracelet is amazing. Which one you prefer? (Images from internet)

About the Breguet Heritage Ref. 8670

The Breguet Heritage collection, introduced in the late 1990s, represents a departure from the brand's more traditional round cases, embracing a distinctive tonneau shape. This collection offers a contemporary interpretation of Breguet's classical design codes, integrating the signature fluted caseband, Breguet hands, and guilloché dials within a curvilinear form factor. The Heritage line aims to blend historical aesthetics with modern wearability, appealing to collectors seeking a unique profile from the esteemed manufacture.

The Reference 8670 features a tonneau-shaped case, typically crafted from precious metals such as rose gold, with dimensions designed for comfortable wrist presence. It houses an automatic mechanical movement, often visible through a sapphire case back, showcasing Breguet's meticulous finishing. The dial commonly features a hand-guilloché pattern, Roman numerals, and a date aperture, maintaining legibility and classical elegance. The movement is engineered for reliability and precision, reflecting Breguet's horological expertise.

For collectors, the Heritage 8670 stands out due to its tonneau case, a less common form within Breguet's historical output. It offers an alternative to the ubiquitous round watch, providing a distinct aesthetic while retaining the brand's high-horology credentials. Its blend of traditional craftsmanship with a more modern case shape makes it a compelling choice for those appreciating both heritage and individuality in their timepieces.

One in steel, one in gold. I think they look and wear pretty dated on their bracelets. Maybe with a more modern strap pairing? The dumont is just a very boring santos to me...never clicked with it. The only thing that's stopped me from a Santos is that they scratch up easily.

As for the Cartier, the Santos Dumont on strap for me, all day long.

... if it ticks nicely for the next 10 years! Did you get a little bag with all the part they changed? 10 years ago, I got that from Longines: the old hands and some wheels! A nice touch to confirm that they actually did something. For square, Cartier Santos 100 black for me! Best, E.

Just today I was looking at this and its chrono models in white gold bracelets, just so chic. As for the Cartier, my wife and father in law both have a tank francaise on bracelet, one is mechanical and the other one is quartz, they look good but a bit dated and old as a model and not in a good way. If I had to choose between your two options it would be the Dumont for me. Did you try them on your wrist?

The Francaise feels more robust and practical with bracelet. But then i looked at the WR rating : 30 meter. Very disappointed as they could've made them 100 mtr like santos, given the sporty look. The Dumont is very pretty . Thin and dressy, 30 ntr WR is acceptable for this kind of watch. I like the "stretched" roman numerals...looks modern and sophisticated , more than usual romans. But i wonder should i spend 7K for a quartz..
