In this insightful review, m2 shares his extensive journey to find the ideal daily sports watch, culminating in the Breguet Marine GMT. His detailed analysis highlights the watch's unique craftsmanship and practical features, offering a refreshing perspective on a segment often dominated by more conventional choices. m2's experience provides valuable context for collectors seeking a blend of horological artistry and everyday utility.

I’ve been on the hunt for a daily ā€œdiverā€ type watch I can leave on 24/7 while on vacation or traveling for work. Ended going through quite a few watches, like the Parmigiani Tonda chronograph, Hublot integral, and another 3 or 4 watches from all of the usual suspects…

I thought I had settled on a Rolex Coke on jubilee.

But after a while two things happened:

1. I felt like it was nice, but not worth the money versus other options on the preowned end of things. It is boring versus the competition.

2. I felt like it sends the wrong signal, and I couldn’t wear it to things like factory visits. This meant I wasn’t wearing it much. If I don’t wear something it has to go.

In ultimate WIS fashion, I have gone through this cycle 4 or 5 times now with rolex lol. But I think I finally learned my lesson.

Anyways, I knew I wanted something with good water resistance, lume, interesting craftsmanship, and maybe a cool complication.

Then I remembered the Breguet Marine.

I’ve actually owned the time only variant of this watch, which I sold when I got my bespoke benzginer as there was a lot of overlap.

Then I ended up getting the chrono version but they are ridiculously big and heavy because of the gold. The chrono had an issue too and it had to go back.

So….here we are šŸ˜‚

For me, this variant is perfect; and maybe the best made sports watch in the price range these go for?

We can start with the case. Fluted, soldered lugs…beautifully styled crown guards matching the marine motif. In my opinion, many modern watches treat cases as an afterthought. This is not the case with Breguet! Same deal with the deployant. It has a wave motif, as do the strap retainers. You never see details like this with other divers. The tang buckle can be separated from the deployant components if you just want a buckle but the deployant wears very flat and doesn’t add much bulk, so I’m leaving it on.

Heat blued numerals and hands. Very evenly done and great to look at with various lighting changes. Incredibly consistent.

Actual guilloche. Not stamping. For me, you can never have enough guilloche. The dial for the 24hr display has multiple patterns, a very nice touch. The back of the watch features a guilloche rotor as well.

Note how the date window is nicely cut out and finished. Not jarring at all.

The movement has a 72 hour power reserve, and all the modern bells and whistles you’d expect. Seems to be losing about a second a day.

100m of WR! I was seriously considering a few other much pricier pieces but they all had 30m of water resistance which is very odd for sport-looking watches.

Finishing of the movement is decent, but it’s not as nice as my Tradition or Classique pieces from Breguet. I’ve now owned four traditions and three of these marines, and the Classique Reveil Du Tsar…and the lower quality of finish seems to be standard with the Marine. With that said, everything is executed to a much higher quality level than what competitors offer in the same price range, and the other watches I mentioned do have a higher MSRP, so it’s fair to expect lower quality of finish here. Again though, not bad in any way whatsoever versus other stuff you’ll see in this range; I’m very pleased. The finishing is a cut below my AP Offshore, but the dial side is a lot better. To me it seems like they decided to spend more on the dials, which makes sense for this type of watch.

Another note on ownership. Breguet has extremely reasonable service costs. For me this is appealing, and makes me ok with wearing a watch more often.

The one caveat with this watch…

Breguet wears large because of the lugs. This is 42mm and 12.5mm thick. I find it comfy, but it’s certainly not a small watch. It feels more like 44mm. Because it’s not super thick, this isn’t a huge deal to me. My Armin Strom Mirrored force is 43mm and 11 or 12mm thick, but this feels bigger due to the lugs. So keep that in mind if you are someone that doesn’t like larger watches and are considering picking this up.

The other mistake I think Breguet made was putting lume on so much of the dial! When you are wearing this at night at 3 am and in an haze…it’s kind of a mess and not super intuitive to tell the time. 4 hands are lumed, as is the main dial, the 2nd timezone subdial and for some reason the day/night dial is too. A ton of markers are lumed too. It looks cool at night, but is extremely hard to read.

If you’re someone that loves messing around with various configurations of straps, that’s the other area Breguet kind of sucks with because their lugs don’t allow for quick release straps. With that said, I already have some custom straps coming for this lol. The stock rubber is awesome, don’t get me wrong.

Overall if you love the styling of this watch, you can’t go wrong with it. You are not going to find a sports watch made better than this in the range these go for. Maybe the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and Bathyscaphe are better in movement finishing but they lack the guilloche dial. If you’re someone that can’t pull off a 44mm watch without it looking horribly oversized, I would avoid this!

Finally, the crown on this gmt variant is not a screw down. The chrono and time only both are. I’ll get it tested and wear it in the water anyways though. Not overly concerned given it’s not like intend on doing crazy water sports with it. Still a little odd to me though.

Third time lucky? šŸ€ I am also grateful for your description, especially about the size - that might be a killer for me (as well as the inability to switch straps at will). Great watch and a line I have on occasion considered but never saw as a priority, as a so rarely engage in water sports, where I would find it warranted šŸ˜ŠšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

A litte less scared with this watch because it’s stainless instead of the wg variant haha.

Having first been drawn in by the Classique collection and then the Tradition, I hadn't paid much attention to the Breguet Marine line to date. Your review has shown me what I've been missing. I love it when members here review watches thoroughly and honestly, as more commercial blog sites can be limited by their funding model to writing superficial puff pieces. More like this, please - and another look at the Breguet Marine collection for me!
