Peter, known as pfang56 on WatchProSite, shares his journey to acquiring the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin Ref. 15202OR. His candid reflections on initially overlooking this reference, only to embrace its unique charm, offer valuable insights into evolving collector preferences. This piece explores why a 'simple complication' in a precious metal can become a cherished 'lifer watch' for even the most discerning enthusiasts.
Today, I was thrilled at the opportunity to purchase a 15202OR at a boutique today - and it was truly another special experience with AP. I imagine that in the last year of production that it was truly a special and lucky opportunity that I could not pass up!
It's odd that I did pass on this model twice in its history - mostly because a) I thought the functions were too simple for my taste, and b) I couldn't pull off a full RG bracelet on the wrist. But I realise lately that there is some space in a collection for a simple complication in a luxurious metal - and this is clearly fitting the bill quite well. I had considered getting the new movement chronograph version, but part of me felt connected with this one that has passed me multiple times.
Some observations:
The dial is truly extraordinary - going from a denim blue to a shiny Royal blue under different lighting
The case and bracelet finishing is absolutely superb, definitely on a higher level than on my Patek 5712
The Extra Thin nature of the movement is quite special - allowing this to fit comfortably under a shirt sleeve, and also may help
prevent any hard random knocks on the wall
- The date set is horrendously old school - there is no quick set function and with a smallish crown you spend some time turning past midnight multiple weeks to get the date right
- The price - while certainly the secondary market is another thing, out the door this watch is priced not so far from the new movement chronograph versions in RG, which have more gold and more movement!
Anyway, this is definitely a lifer watch for me. I even committed a little more by getting the matching cuff links.
Cheers
Peter
P.S. It seems a bit serendipitous that Horology75, whom I've replicated with watch shoe shots was showing the same model a few days ago and et voila! You are my lucky charm Horology75! (may you get a Ceramic Skeleton soon).
