5920 performance

Aug 19, 2006,05:05 AM

In response to your question about 5920 performance, I bought one three months ago and wear it every day. I can report that it gains 7.5 seconds per day which I suppose is more or less acceptable. Is this likely to change in the future as I've heard that watches sometimes take a few months to 'settle down'? Rgs Jeremy

Breguet or Patek?

 By: Forest : August 13th, 2006-04:16
I am thinking about buying either a Breguet (5197 or 5930) or a Patek Philippe (5119, 5120). I like the looks of the Breguet watches better, but Patek watches seem to have this aura about them. If I buy a Breguet, will I regret not owning a Patek? I'm new...

Ferrari or Lamborghini?

It seems that we are getting more and more of these questions, lately... Breguet vs PP, Beguet vs VC, and so on. Hence my car analogy - would you regret buying either a Ferrari or a Lamborghini? Probably not. Are they the same thing? Definitely not. Ultim...

Movements?

Thanks, Alberto. What about the movements? I keep reading that Patek movements are "in a class by themselves" and that the finishing is superior to Breguet. Thoughts?

it's hard to generalize

Hi Forest, Breguet is a little hit and miss across their range. Some relatively uninspired (if nicely dressed) Piguets and former-Lemanias and some really interesting, finely finished "in-house" movements sprinkled in as well (the new Traditions for insta...

Thanks, good insight. Alas, more questions...

Thanks, John. So what is your opinion of the movements in the Breguet 5197 and 5930, and the Patek Philippe 5119 and 5120? Also, is there a book, website or other source that you can suggest so I can learn more about these movements and others?

a mixed bag

Hi Forest, That's a pretty diverse sampling of movements form these two makers. The standouts to me as a movement geek are the 5197 and 5120. The 5197 houses the new Breguet Cal. 591A which is the classic Longines/Lemania/Breguet double-barrel ultrathin a...

Thanks, John. I really appreciate both your expertise and your writing style. Your response was very informative. I also read the article you wrote and I'll read it many more times, no doubt. It?s clear I have a lot to learn. And on that note? I was told ...

I could go either way on that

Hi Forest, I've never heard of any studies conducted to support either side of the story, but I think they both have some theoretical advantages/disadvantages. My feeling is that if you're not going to use a watch for periods of 6 months or so, you'd be d...

An old problem

 By: Fencer : August 14th, 2006-01:01
Of course if you buy a Breguet you will still wish you owned a PP. And vice-versa. They are both wonderful watches and buying one doesn't preclude lusting after the other. But that's very different from regretting either purchase. Owning either should giv...

You got it.

Thanks, Denis, I think you hit the nail on the head. No matter which brand I choose, I'll still want the other! (Sigh.) I'm not complaining, though. Trying to figure all this out is half the fun.

I may be the person that John was referring to when he said he's seeing this question a lot lately. Back in March I inadvertently touched off a longish forum discussion by asking about Brequet vs. Patek. I found the information I received fascinating, but...

Good Perspective!

Thanks, that's a very helpful perspective. I'm actually a VERY simple person. (No Ferrari or Porsche for me. I share a Honda Civic with my wife!) I am allowing myself just this one luxury item in my life. Something I can hand down to my son. So I'm being ...

after three months, it's not likely to "break in" any more

 By: ei8htohms : August 19th, 2006-05:17
If you want it regulated a little more closely, you'd have to bring it to Breguet or a HIGHLY skilled watchmaker. Not that regulating it is all that difficult, but just opening the back of a Breguet takes someone of superior skill to make sure no cosmetic...
