I completely agree with tee530's assessment. Personally, I look at rule #7 as an optional. I look forward to meeting you and Josh again the next time I'm in New York. Hopefully I'll be visiting again soon!

...by turning the crown backwards, you are just letting one of the winding gears slip over a clutch. There is probably some very minor wear associated with this, but in a regularly-maintained watch, it is very unlikely to be a point of failure. I wouldn't...

Just a joke that crossed my mind when I read your post! You are absolutely correct, all hand-wound watches (including Harry Winston handwound models) should observe the aforementioned rule.

And on some watches, it will benefit the watch. So it's something that is such a small task that there is only a win - win or win - not lose solution.
