Franck Muller is alive and well (and the Aeternitas Mega)

Apr 27, 2007,21:12 PM

In fact I saw him at the WPHH (World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie, Franck Muller Watchland group exhibition) dinner in Geneva, where the company presented its novelties for 2007. I will be posting more on the event as well as the new products for 2007 soon, but in the meantime here's one of the watches...

It's the Aeternitas Mega, a supercomplication and one of the largest watches I have ever seen. It contains a grande et petit sonnerie with Westminster chime, rattrapante chronograph, 1000-year perpetual calendar with retrograde indicators and equation of time, and of course a tourbillon. Franck Muller has had Pierre-Michel Golay, the talented watchmaker formerly of Gerald Genta and creator of the Genta automatic Westminster chime grande sonnerie, onboard for some time. One can expect many more supercomplications from the Watchland group in time to come.

His World Premiere watches throughout the nineties were once supercomplication after another, also remember the significant work he did on the "world's most complicated wristwatch" in the Guiness Book of World Records. Furthermore, with Pierre-Michel Gola...

Several reasons... Firstly is the prominence of his jewelled and colourful watches, which are not a favourite of Purists; those tend to overshadow the serious technical achievements. The other reason is the turmoil that engulfed the company 1-2 years back...
