Overseas Ultra Thin and Perpetual

Aug 15, 2016,04:52 AM

Hi all,
In my quick watch trip to Geneva I had the opportunity to try also the two flagship models of the new Overseas collection
Great, really great watches, particularly impressed by the Perpetual Calendar to die for, but, there is always on or more but:
1) it a shame VC decided to produce these two versions in WG only a steel version would have been a real killer (let's wait and see)
2) retail price out of this world, especially in this period, and I'm not referring to the WG models only, take for instance the steel crono... My VC AD in Italy thinks they went for a sort of suicide (again let's wait and see)
3) looking the press pictures I thought both dials were more "bronish", or at least with some light brown reflection, in reality they're plain grey, my taste liked a lot the impression I got from the press material
4) strap exchange ingenious and easy, to be tested over
Time, but at the first impression it seems pretty solid
5) resale value still a big question mark... Especially vs direct competitors like the Nautilus or the RO
At the end I really liked both, if money were not a problem I'll take the Perpetual, considering what I wrote I think a wise decision could be to wait and see, hoping for new steel iterations in the near future, maybe couple with different dial colors

Ultra Thin time only (avaliable for sale)

Perpetual Calendar (mock up which travelled the world, this is way it shows some hairlines...)

Curious to hear your thoughts on these two models, and more in general on the new Overseas line, in which VC is investing a lot of marketing effort
Ciao
Luca

The new Ultra-thin is one fine effort from VC

I agree on your "complaints". I still prefer the blue/grey new GP Laureato, but that''s me, not surprising, still the VC is fantastic and if available in Steel a real killer. Perpetual Calendar not my thing in general.... CC

Prefer the Ultra Thin

There really are no complaints on this one apart from the price demanded The PC I am not so sure about - especially the design of the months, which results in relatively poor legibility, at least at a glance... Thanks for sharing!

I really like that Ultrathin

Sadly I haven't been able to see it live. But the price is steep. Very very steep. Too steep. What will someone choose? A steel Nautilus for more than half the price? A Royal Oak Extra Thin for a quarter of the price (almost) Or this? Hopefully they will ...

From the pure aesthetic point of view...

 By: Mike H : August 15th, 2016-07:02
...I would choose the chrono with blue dial (this blue is mesmerizing), but to remain in your ultra thin selection, I would stay with the time only and not the PC (nice horological option but I don't like the aesthetic of this one too much and imho it doe...

Thanks all for participating

It seems that there a general consensus on the fact that Vacheron raised the bar too much on the price, and not only for these Ultra Thin which remain really enjoyable I will wait if they will decide to step back and offer them also in steel, even if cons...

I agree: the prices of both ultra-thin watches are non-sense.

 By: foversta : August 15th, 2016-08:27
I don't understand Vacheron on this topic. Fx

I would pay every penny....

but not in white gold but rather in platinum. Best regards Edward

Where to start?

 By: anonymous09 : August 15th, 2016-09:40
2) Across the board, the VCO retail price is dafter than the daftest person from the planet D.A.F.T. ! 4) Yep, not the daftest thing Vacheron did – and the deployant clasp looks to have been well engineered. 5) Just like the outgoing VCOs, residual on the...

prices are o.k.: competitors are also "insanely" expensive.

You picked two really, really cool watches! The ultrathin movement has a connection to the first series of the Nautilus and the RO, and therefore collectible. Resale? I suppose people who buy watches at this level have no time to think about resale and do...

I just went ahead and ordered the Time Only ...

 By: Ammerix : September 13th, 2016-01:59
Due tto arrive Jan/Feb, next year. For me the price is more like a bargain, and not to be compared with anything else out there Would I put up my DS for sale? Now THAT would be insane - as well as ridiculous! Best to you, Moritz! Amerix

You have ordered the WG Overseas time only? YOU have got taste and style!

By: COUNT DE MONET : September 13th, 2016-04:48
Selling a DS is no option, I agree! Also agree that the VC is like nothing out there. I am still very impressed and happy for you that you chose the time only. Best Moritz

Beautiful watch! [nt]

Has it arrived yet

Hodinkee described the time only as one of the best feeling watches. I am curious what the impressions are from an owner. I have recently been considering that the tactile experience of a watch is the most important component, versus looks or complication...

Regarding pricing:

 By: willski : August 15th, 2016-13:11
I agree it\'s very, very high but in fairness it\'s in the same ballpark as the 5711/1R and 15202OR (although those are RG as opposed to WG). Conclusion being all three are priced very high!

I really like the Time only....

By: blomman Mr Blue : August 15th, 2016-14:35
But Would have loved more contrast between the grey sunburst dial and the blue accent numerals! To make the dial "pop" more! Best Blomman

Are we going through a new economic boom?

 By: Sandgroper : August 15th, 2016-23:03
I wasn't aware, we (I) tend to live under a rock Down Under! In view of VC's new pricing, I can only assume that the economy is going full steam ahead Up Above Thank you for the pictures and comments Luca, I really like the Ultra Thin. The chronograph's d...

I share the same feeling, not aware of the current economic boom, maybe it\'s due to the fact I live in Italy, outside things are getting better it seems... Best Luca

I agree with the majority of the sentiment...

 By: logan2z : August 16th, 2016-17:05
The watches are beautiful but far too expensive. I'm now kind of sorry that I wished for an in-house movement in the chronograph given the rise in pricing as a result. I'm one of those who has been on the fence about an Overseas or an AP but I think the A...

You do realise that...

 By: anonymous09 : August 16th, 2016-17:17
... there’s nothing preventing you from buying a pre-owned 49150, and just enjoying it? A good movement is a good movement, irrespective if made by another company or the same one whose name is on the dial. Such snobbery over in-houseness should be the pr...

Now why didn't I think of that?

 By: logan2z : August 16th, 2016-22:15
I actually prefer the design of the new model to the old - regardless of the movement inside. I don't think I'd call it snobbery so much as an expectation of a true in-house movement when a watch reaches a certain price point. That's one of the things tha...

I really like the new Overseas line...

 By: shortys home : August 16th, 2016-22:32
... and I will not comment on the prices, since there are many more watches in the market that are equally if not more suited to raise your eyebrows ;-) The one thing I miss though is the large double window date on the chrono. I found the previous model ...

I agree that the Ultra thin should have been in steel...

 By: kennygfunk : September 28th, 2016-15:52
If it were in steel, I would buy a blue dial. I bet a lot of people would. I think this is the closest watch to being possibly iconic that I've seen in a long time! I know that's a strong statement. Still Vacheron has the pedigree and this watch definitel...

The time only

 By: Mostel : October 9th, 2016-17:09
is just 'whew!' in pictures. So clean! I doubt it will be available in steel--or if it is--the dial will be downgraded enough that it won't compare... It's all about this crazy overpriced beauty... pre-owned.

VC pricing

 By: uaewatchguy : October 9th, 2016-20:22
I have found that some AD in emerging markets are discounting VC heavily so shop around and stay away from the VC salons/boutiques as they belong to Richmond and are not authorized to discount. You should be able to get at least 30-40% off between the dis...

Really like the perpetual

 By: Tourbeon : October 31st, 2016-06:12
Aside from cost as others have mentioned.

From my understanding and imho yes...

 By: Mike H : February 12th, 2017-14:29
...apart from the pricing issue !

Exactly as described by Jack Forster!

Mine arrived early, a week or so before Christmas, and has since become my daily wearer - or at least for a few crucial hours per day. Also the time-keeping is extraordinary, and the legibility second to none - without the distraction of a nagging seconds...

As my experience with timepieces grows I am appreciating that there is so much more than just the collection of complications or "fashion" appeal of a watch. To own truly pleasurable timepieces is perhaps the ultimate goal, and no doubt the wearing of a p...
