5512 Radial Dial ?

Dec 10, 2016,17:15 PM

I have always been interested at early Submariners, and one of the specific variant I love the most is Underline dial 5512 & 5513

And recently I've noticed an interesting phenomenon on this specific 5512 underline with that some called it "flat bottom" coronet.

I started to notice that the hash marks on this watch are longer than the common 5512/5513 gilt (non underline) I've seen.

This particular example is a property of a dear friend and has a 1,00x,xxx serial number

And this picture below seems to confirm so.. I hope my eyes are not playing tricks on me for seeing too many watches the past couple of months.

But I'm pretty sure everyone can notice from this picture that the hashmarks on the left looks longer than the one on the right.. and the lume indexes has smaller gap to the hashmark compared to the one on the right..

And I start to make a comparison with a GMT "radial" underline, that is for sure has a longer hashmark than a normal gilt GMT..

If I see it correctly the hashmark seems pretty similar in length, but the lumes are placed more inwards for the GMT.. and makes it more noticeable that it is different to a common gilt GMT..

I'm still wondering if this phenomenon (longer hashmark Submariners) is specific to this type coronet dial or it is the same with other underline Submariner with different coronet.

I hope I can see more example or more side by side picture comparison from the forum members here

Have a great weekend!

Sam

P.S. I would like to thank my friend P & N for sending me side by side picture comparison of the 5512 underline and 5512 gilt and 1675 GMT underline

There is always a question of image distortion from the cyrstal. But your Rolex coronet is long and skinny and could be a variant. Yours also has the swiss at the very bottom vs the ones I am showing have it in the swiss in the middle. For me the radial i...

The 5512 gilt skinny Coronet "appears" to have slightly longer index markers.

It appears these skinney coronet do have slightly longer but as you said some side by side will help things along. Thanks for all your contributions that help us navigate the wonderful hobby. Best Bill

You find it here: As mentioned there, the pics come from the web archive of sheartime - while you find the best close-ups for Rolex Sports watches on Jacek's site HQMilton, sheartime is the largest source for "dial only" shots (and shows also the most re...
